When my husband and I have Tanqueray we end up in war...when we have Gilbey's - we don't! I heard somewhere that Tanqueray glows green in the dark. What is that which 'glows' green in Tanqueray, and is that our 'hostility' culprit? |

Regarding the matter of Tanqueray glowing, I suspect that you may have seen a gin-and-tonic that glowed under black light. It's not the gin that's responsible: the tonic water contains quinine, which gives off a glow when exposed to ultraviolet light. I cannot offer a scientific explanation for Tanqueray producing more fights than Gilbey's gin. But I have noticed that many people may associate certain kinds of alcoholic beverages with experiences that occurred when they were under the influence of that beverage. For instance, many years ago I got terribly ill after drinking too much Scotch. To this day, I feel queasy if I even smell Scotch. A psychological linkage between Scotch and nausea has formed in my mind. On the other hand, I once had a wonderful romantic experience while drinking cold duck sparkling wine. Ever since then, a sip of cold duck puts me in the mood for love every time. Perhaps, just by coincidence, you and your husband had a disagreement once while drinking Tanqueray. Thereafter, consuming Tanqueray may have brought up unconscious connections with fighting and unpleasantness, which may have led to the sort of mood that would be conducive to another fight. Just a theory. I doubt that you'll find any secret ingredient in Tanqueray that causes fights. If there were such a thing, I would imagine that pub owners everywhere would be reluctant to serve Tanqueray to their customers, lest a brawl erupt. ;-) |

What PinkFreud speculated makes perfect sense. I don't know if she is clinically correct but I certainly agree with her theory. : ) Great answer!! |

monicadenece... Whatever additional ingredients may be found in Tanqueray, we won't find them out easily: "Although the Tanqueray gin is made with juniper berries, coriander, and angelica in the botanicals, the other ingredients remain a closely guarded secret. However, the Tanqueray gin distillery insists that the botanicals be added to the spirit immediately prior to the final distillation whereas some other gin distillers steep the ingredient in the spirit for a while before distillation occurs." http://www.ardentspirits.com/Links/Tanqueray.html However, having spent 20 years in the field of mental health, I'm inclined to agree with PinkFreud. While unrelated to the Freud of psychiatric renown, PinkFreud has identified the concept of association, which can have such a powerful effect that some therapists recommend that husbands and wives not look at each other when arguing, lest they come to identify such unpleasant feelings with the face of their loved ones. Other than the mysterious ingredients, this may, indeed, be the answer to your question. The only other thought that comes to mind is whether you've looked at the bottle and noticed if the proof of the Tanqueray you're imbibing has a higher proof than the Gilbey's. There are some versions of Tanqueray which are 94 proof, or 47% alcohol, as opposed to Gilbey's, which is 80 proof, or 40% alcohol, if I remember correctly. sublime1-ga |

The only way to *really* test it, is to have someone else pour up the drinks and see how you act when you don't know what the brand is. -K~ |
