Question ID: 220893
I'm a photographer and am seeking to earn a certificate (preferably)
or maybe an AA degree in digital imaging. I live in Southern
California (Whittier, 90601)and am looking to commute to school. I am
not interested in darkroom procedures as I have chemical
sensitivities, and also I feel the future of photography is primarily
in the digital realm. I would like to hone my skills with the camera,
learn more about the art of photography, learn to use PhotoShop, and
learn about digital printing. I'm already familiar with the programs
at Pasadena City College, Long Beach City College, and Tri-Community
Photo Center in Covina, and I'm hoping to find something geared more
towards, or ideally SPECIFICALLY geared towards, digital photography.

Dear Nerv,

It wasn't easy but I've located several such programmes:

The East Los Angeles College offers skills set Certificate program in
Digital Imaging <http://www.elac.cc.ca.us/catalog/certprog/photo3.html>
as well as a certificate course in photography
<http://www.elac.cc.ca.us/catalog/certprog/photo7.html>. It is located
in Monterey Park.

Cypress College offers a certificate program in digital photography
<http://www.cypresscollege.org/votech/photography/>.

CSU Fullerton offers a certificate programme in digital imaging
<http://www.csufextension.org/Classes/Certificate/CertificateClasses.asp?GN=3103&GV=2&LID=>.

El Camino College in Torrace offers Certificate of Competence or of
Completion- Digital Arts in which you could choose a route of digital
photography <http://www.elcamino.cc.ca.us/Fine_Arts/Art_Dept/certif.html#digartscompetence>.

Coastline College in Fountain Valley offers a certificate in visual
imaging, which is a bit more concentrated on graphic design issues but
might nevertheless fit your purposes:

A bit further down south, UC San Diego's extension offers a
certificate in digital imaging
<http://www.extension.ucsd.edu/Programs/index.cfm?vAction=certDetail&CertificateID=29>.

The most professional course, by the way, is probably Lepp
Institute's, but it is located in Los Osos
<http://www.leppinstitute.com>. Naturally, you could always seek to
obtain a degree online, and there are several colleges offering degree
programs (towards diploma, certificate, AA or higher) in photography
and related subjects, such as digital imaging.

I have extensively searched databases with strategies such as:
- Searching for keywords such as ["digital imaging" , "digital
photography", "electronic photography"], with words such as
[California, CA or Angeles (for "Los Angeles)] and the word course.
- In addition, browsing through lists of photography schools, that are
listed in places such as Shaw Guide
<http://photoschools.shawguides.com/search?t=California> or
<http://directory.google.com/Top/Arts/Photography/Education/>.

I hope this answered your question. I suppose you expected much more
places, but after my research, I must concede, that there are not many
places in Southern California offering a certificate geared programme
which is solely in digital photography, without dark room work. If you
need further clarifications on this answer, please let me know before
you rate it.
