How many people receive hemodialysis catheters per year in the US?
These catheters are also known as dialysis shunts.

Hello svdh-ga,

I located some interesting information at a Corporative website dated
April 2002.

They estimate that the dialysis catheter market is worth over $XXXXXXX
dollars and $XXXXXXX worldwide.

They go on to say that there are nearly XXXXXXXX end-stage renal
disease (ESRD) patients in the U.S. and nearly XXXXXXXXXX worldwide
and that in the United States $XXXXXXXX dollars is spent every year to
care for ESRD patients, most of whom rely on a catheter for blood
access at some point in their treatment.

In a Medical Journal I found the following information:

Each year in the United States, hospitals and clinics purchase
XXXXXXXXX intravascular devices for the administration of iv fluids,
medications, blood products, and parenteral nutrition fluids; to
monitor hemodynamic status; and to provide hemodialysis. The majority
of these devices are peripheral venous catheters, but XXXXXXXX CVCs
are inserted each year.

(All the XXXXXXX are quantities)

Would the above information suffice as an answer?

Thanks

In the other answers I've received, validation of figures has come
from multiple sources. Since the information you're providing appears
to come from just one corporate website, I would suggest that you find
other references for your figures. Thanks.

Bobbie7 -- I just re-read your posting, and see that it did come from
two sources. My mistake! In any case, if you could find a couple
more sources for validation, I would accept that as an answer. Thank
you.

Hello again svdh-ga,

In response to your clarification that you wished to accept the
information I mentioned previously plus additional sources, I am
providing the following to you:

From Spire Corporation:

Spire Receives FDA Clearance to Market Hemodialysis Catheter

“The Company estimates that the dialysis catheter market is over $100
million in the U.S. and $250 million worldwide. The Company plans to
begin selling the product immediately through a nationwide network of
specialty medical product distributors.”

“Dialysis therapy is the only treatment available for kidney failure,
other than a kidney transplant. Currently, there are nearly 300,000
end-stage renal disease (ESRD) patients in the U.S. and nearly one
million worldwide. In the U.S. alone, nearly $15 billion is spent
annually to care for ESRD patients, most of whom rely on a catheter
for blood access at some point in their treatment.”

Guidelines for the Management of Intravascular Catheter Related
Infections

“Each year in the United States, hospitals and clinics purchase >150
million intravascular devices for the administration of iv fluids,
medications, blood products, and parenteral nutrition fluids; to
monitor hemodynamic status; and to provide hemodialysis.”

“The majority of these devices are peripheral venous catheters, but >5
million CVCs are inserted each year. More than 200,000 nosocomial
bloodstream infections occur each year in the United States; most of
these infections are related to different types of intravascular
devicesin particular, the nontunneled CVC.”

“The hemodialysis catheter market is estimated to be $95 million. The
LifeJet(TM) F-16 is also approved for use as an apheresis catheter,
which expands the market to well over $100 million. Apheresis is the
process commonly used to collect stem cells that are later returned to
the patient as part of cancer treatment.”

From Biolink Corporation:

“Over 300,000 patients in the U.S. were receiving dialysis therapy at
the end of 2001.”

“The patient population requiring dialysis is growing at approximately
7% annually.”

“Worldwide, approximately 1.4 million people will require dialysis by
2003.”

“Vascular access for hemodialysis costs the U.S. healthcare system
approximately $2 billion per year.”

“According to the United States Renal Data System (USRDS) data from
1997, the total costs for vascular access complications reached at
least $2 billion in the year 2000. These complications included
thrombosis, stenosis, infection, post-dialysis bleeding, and limb
ischemia. In 2000, approximately 80,000 new patients will receive
hemodialysis in the United States and an equal number will require
replacement access procedures. The overall numbers are daunting: at
the end of 1997, over 250,000 patients received hemodialysis treatment
in the United States. At an annual patient growth rate of 7 percent,
1.4 million people worldwide are expected to suffer from ESRD by
2003.”

Catheter Industry To Grow At 10.4% Annually From 1996-2003

“American medical device manufacturers dominate the catheter industry,
producing 70 to 80 percent of the catheters used around the world. In
1997, worldwide sales of catheter products totaled approximately $7.3
billion, and are growing at a healthy pace of 10.4% annually.

The fastest growing segment of the catheter industry, the coronary
catheter market, is expected to reach $4 billion by 2003, growing at
11.2% annually.”

(. . .)

“The largest segment, however, is the renal market, which is comprised
primarily of urinary catheters and dialysis catheters. Currently being
a $4 billion segment, it is expected to reach $7.1 billion in 2003.
The best-known urology catheters are Foley catheters, which have been
commercially available since the 1930s. These catheters and others,
both internal and external condom-type catheters, are used for
incontinence, for dying patients, and often for bladder drainage
following surgery or an incapacitating injury or illness.”

Temporary Venous Dialysis Catheter

“The catheter is used in patients who do not have an AVF or AVG but
who need hemodialysis urgently. It is used temporarily as a means of
access until an AVF or AVG can be inserted. The catheter is used
permanently in some people who cannot tolerate the standard methods of
access. It poses significant risk for infection and failure and often
must be replaced.

There are approximately 300,000 people on dialysis in the United
States. Some patients require dialysis in the hospital or clinic and
others have in-home dialyzers that they are trained to operate.”

Biz Briefs: JUNE 13-19, 2003

About 5 million U.S. patients have catheters inserted every year.

“Nuvelo Inc. of Sunnyvale began dosing patients in a second trial of
ialfimiprase, used to treat blood clots blocking catheters. The trial
will be conducted with 100 patients nationwide. About 5 million U.S.
patients have catheters inserted every year. Of that, 20 to 25 percent
eventually become blocked. Nuvelo hopes to prove its catheters will
better reduce the risk of complications compared to current
therapies.”
