Help, quick please! Summer is in progress. I want to find a few
Internet shopping sites (or even Internet versions of "real" stores,
that take online orders) that each carry several options in the
clothes item I'll describe. This is probably a question for the female
researchers, particularly those who understand how finding their
favorite figure-flattering detail(s) in a piece of clothing can make a
huge difference in how proportioned she thinks she looks; and
sometimes in hiding a figure flaw without LOOKING like she's trying to
hide anything (as in resorting to wearing all-over baggy pieces when
it's only an isolated area she wants to obscure).

Here I am referring to the dreaded slight flab at the back of the very
upper arm. I am not a plus size or overweight; just a former athlete
who isn't used to looking at the new, softer me yet! To remedy this I
want to find a certain sleeve length in summer shirts, that is
slightly longer than those usually found in typical trendy brands. BUT
the thing is, other than needing this sleeve length, I WANT the more
youthful/fashion conscious selection. I suspect many contemporary
brands often "jazz up" their shirts with tinier sleeves than I seek,
or none at all. But I want both: upper arm coverage AND style. I'm
definitely trying to AVOID loose, nondescript, mundane cuts meant more
for conservative, older women or those who need/want a lot of
obscuring coverage.

To try to describe the sleeve length/style I'm looking for: "Cap"
sleeves are too short/revealing to accomplish my purpose. *BUT* if you
could take a cap sleeve (that is generous to begin with, not just a
tiny wedge of material) and get rid of the upward slant, so that it
instead went *straight across* the arm sideways. Therefore covering up
-- and hitting just below -- all of that rounded muscle at the
shoulder, whatever you call that.

Things I DON'T want: going too long, as in 3/4 sleeves or anything
real close to that; midriff/half shirts (but waist-length ok);
high-end pricing (e.g. often more than $50 per shirt).

I probably want mostly pull-on styles. Various good features, FYI (not
expected all in one shirt!), would be cotton blends with some stretch;
blends with Lycra or nylon or knits; wrap and/or sash tie styles;
linings; and fabric with enough thickness/weight to stay smooth.
(Slightly sheer ok in items meant to have a relaxed fit.) In other
words, styles that are somewhat fitted and allow one's shape to be
discerned; but not super clingy, thin or flimsy -- as though a
washboard stomach/six-pack abs are required. Other than all of the
above, I'm open to many colors, patterns!

Thanks, I hope!! And sorry; yes, summer can creep up on -- and shock
-- the Midwestern female!!

Hi 4u2do:

Pretend that the space between your underarm and you elbow bone is
divided into tenths. How many tenths down from the underarm to the
elbow is the sleeve length you desire?

Then, do the same tenth division from the shoulder point to the crook
of the elbow and tell me that. This will assist in determining the
exact length sleeve you seek.

Best regards,
journalist-ga

Wow, I appreciate your attention to detail! Unfortunately units of
measurement and getting a picture in my head of various parts of my
arm in tenths escapes me! Tell me if the following addresses what you
need to know, or else we'll find something else.

1] This is just my personal bone length, which a shirt won't take into
consideration, but here goes! Inner arm: running a tape measure from
the center of my armpit (the "hollow" of it), my inner arm measures
about 11" to the elbow bend. Outer arm: measuring from the very top
("north surface") of my arm -- where it first emerges from my body --
and along the outside of it to my elbow, it is about 12." The sleeve
length I want would hit at about 4" down on the inner arm, and about
5" down on the outer arm. Slightly longer than that would be better
than shorter. Looking at the ridiculous line I just drew on my arm
(the one that finally made me realize I need help, ha ha), the lengths
I would consider would range between a third of the way to about an
inch short of the halfway point of my upper arm. Straight across, or
if any slant, not one that threatens to let The Forbidden Zone peek
out.

2] If I'm describing it right, a sleeve hitting this point would
completely cover that arm muscle I mentioned before, ending just below
it. Do you know the muscle I mean? It is the one at the very top of
the arm (sprouts at north and heads south), right at the shoulder.
Visible as an arc on the outside of the arm. It would pretty much fit
into the cup of your hand. (*NOT* the bicep or tricep obviously, I
remember the names of those!)

3] Another possibly helpful way to describe this point would be to say
it is right about at that very popular spot for women to get "armband"
tattoos these days, which go all the way around the arm sideways.
Right under THAT unidentified muscle.

Whew! Any better? I'd have linked you to an example sleeve pic, or
researched the name of that unidentified muscle, but thought I didn't
have time. However, given the bizarre lengths I go to in describing
things I probably should have! Let me know if those things become
necessary. Or if you still aren't sure, send a link to any old photo
of someone in a shirt that you think is representative of what I mean;
or name that muscle! THX again!

Don't know if anyone found this feasible, all things -- including
subjective tastes -- considered, but it's starting not to feel like a
very well-defined or logical request to me! So I'll put it out of its
misery.
