My father (in Idaho) wants to loan me a car for a few months. For
liability reasons, he'd like to sell it to me for $1 with the idea
that I would then sell it back to him for $1 when I'm done with it. I
would take it to California, where I live. What would be the
legal/bureaucratic fees associated with this? For instance, I know
California taxes out of state car purchases if you bring them into the
state within a certain period of time, and I've heard rumors that some
state governments go off of "fair value" (which would be thousands of
dollars in this case) rather than the actual price paid for the car.
