Catherine Shea (O'Shea) (Shay) born abt 1840 in the parish of
Donoughmore, County Cork, Ireland. Came to United States. The family
lore is that she returned to Ireland with a sickly daughter who died
there and she returned to the US alone. I do not know her married
name or where in the US she lived. I am anxious to get some help with
this. |

Hello,
If you can post any other details about this person that you may have,
such as how she is related to you (if she is related), this would help
researchers. Do you have the names or dates etc. of any of her
siblings, aunts, uncles, cousins, or other related family members? Do
you have any idea of an 'approximate' time frame when she would have
gone back to Ireland or returned to the US? Do you have any knowledge
of whether she was married in Ireland before coming to the US, or
whether she was married in the US after she arrived here? Do you know
if her daughter was born in the US, or in Ireland? Do you have any
idea if they were in Ireland a short time (weeks, months) or a long
period of time (years) when mother and daughter returned there from
the US?
Every 'scrap' of information that you could possibly add would be
beneficial to the reseachers searching for an answer for you. We hope
we can help.

O'Shea (Shea or O'Shay) was daughter of Phillip O'Shea and ellen
Burns(Byrnes). She was born in Donoughmore Parish in 1840 accourding
to census. There were several children-Mary, Catherine, Judith,
Cornelius, Philip John (My granfather) Margaret and Timothy. In 1874
some of the family came to Ballyknockin Parish of Mourneabbey, Co.
Cork. John married Ellen Mulland. His sister Margaret married
Jeremiah Mullane. the story is Catherine came to the US and also
timothy. No idea was part of US they lived. I have heard older
people say that Catherine came back to Ireland with a daughter who
died in Mourneabbey. I have tried for years to find out her married
name but failed. Now this might help. Ellen Mullane had a sister in
Washington DC by the name of mary. Mary married Patrick Martin about
1869 or '70. Would Catherine have come there as she would be a
relative by marriage. I have no further info on Tim. I suppose
Catherine would have come here in her early 20's and would she have
married and have a daughter by '70 or 80's and gone back to Ireland in
the early 1900's? I assume she would have spent several months in
Ireland as travel was by steamship. I have been in the US for many
years. Maybe she had other children and I may have relatives that I
have never met. I have tried alor by myself to make head way in this
search and since I did not have her married name frustation set in.
Please do your best and keep plying me with questions. God Bless.
You asked if she married in Ireland . I do not know but probable not.
Then again it would be worth a try.

Hi ballyknockin-ga,
A number of questions come to mind as I read through your
clarification so I'll just list them in order:
1. Do you have access to the 1840 census you mention? If you could
post all the information about this family from that census it may
provide some more clues for researchers. Please spell everything as it
is spelled on the census.
2. Was your grandfather named 'Philip John' or did you mean 'Philip
and John'(brothers)?
3. "John married Ellen Mulland.....Ellen Mullane had a sister in
Washington DC by the name of mary. Mary married Patrick Martin about
1869 or '70."
Was Ellen's name Mulland, or Mullane? Were Ellen, Mary, and Patrick
Martin from the US or Ireland?
4. Were Catherine and Timothy the only ones who ever came to the US
around that time, or did other family members come a few years later?
If so, do you know where they might have gone when they arrived?
5. Do you still have any family in Ireland who could do any searching
for you, or provide you with the names and contact information of
cemeteries in Ballyknockin Parish of Mourneabbey, Co. Cork and
Donoughmore Parish?
6. You could try contacting any cemeteries in Ballyknockin Parish of
Mourneabbey, Co. Cork and Donoughmore Parish to see if they have a
young female born in the US between 1855-1890 (Catherine's possible
childbearing years) buried there, possibly with any Shea/O'Shea/Shay
relatives or even with Burns/Byrnes relatives in Donoughmore Parish?
It would seem likely that when the daughter died she was buried where
other family members owned plots or one of them may have even given
their own plot to her.
Hope we can find some additional information for you,
wellen
