Southerlandia is a herb of the pea family. In S.A. it is being used
for many ailments, AIDS in particular. Google returns very little
about it. Is the plant or its seeds or extracts available in North
America? Web or news sources?
Thanks, mm

Toxicity study of Sutherlandia leaf powder (sutherlandia microphylla)
consumption

To date no adverse effects have been reported for this plant.

“There are anecdotal indications that this tonic may be of value to
people living with AIDS in terms of enhanced well-being, increased
appetite and body mass as well as increased tolerance for exercise.”

“Over 50 variable involving blood chemistry, haematology, physiology
and animal behaviour were monitored and evaluated by MRC Animal Centre
scientists, statisticians and a medical doctor. No single indication
of toxicity was found after feeding the vervet monkeys with dried
Sutherlandia leaf powder for three months, even at the 9x dose. This
is the first time that an indigenous South African medicinal plant has
been evaluated for safety using vervet monkeys in a controlled
environment.”

Sutherlandia and HIV/AIDS

“These preliminary reports are not a substitute for results from a
controlled clinical trial, but support the hypothesis that
Sutherlandia is a profound immune stimulant and anti-viral plant.”

“Improvements in appetite, weight-gain, sleep, excercise tolerance,
anxiety and overall sense of well-being can be expected. Researchers
anticipate that there will be a delayed progression of HIV into Aids,
and actual remission of the disease is hoped for. This will require
compliance of appropriate does of the correct selection of
Sutherlandia take on an ongoing basis, in addition to meticulous
attention to diet. Alcohol, recreational drugs and other drugs that
damage the immune system should be avoided.”

from Europe and South Africa are currently studying its effects on the

The California Gardening Forum mentions that Sutherlandia frutescens
is grown at Annie’s Annuals

“What I especially like about Annie's is that she will try and grow
things for me that I have brought back from my travels, especially if
they are South African. The latest plants that I was overjoyed to see
include a Red Flowering Legume(and touted as a local cancer drug),
from the Western Cape, Sutherlandia frutescens, a low herbaceous shrub
with almost perpetual bloom and silvery foliage for a hot sunny spot.”
http://forums.gardenweb.com/forums/load/calif/msg0622462322717.html

Annie's Annuals describes how to grow the plant:

Sutherlandia frutescens - “Balloon Pea” - “Cancer Bush”

“Easy to grow, this South African native shrub should be more widely
grown here along the coast, as it likes a wet Winter, tolerates wind &
moderate frosts & is not fussy about soil (well drained is best). It’s
fast growing, too & will bloom within its first year, displaying
fantastic, scarlet-red, pea flowers followed by fascinating, inflated,
green seedpods. (..) Cut it back after flowering to maintain its
attractive form. Very widely used by the indigenous people of South
Africa for a wide variety of ailments, it’s also currently used for
auto-immune related illnesses.”
