Hi Herman, Unfortunately, Google Groups does not support the use of a freestanding news client - you must use the web interface: "Can I use a newsreader (e.g., Outlook Express, Netscape Messenger) to access Google Groups? No. Google Groups provides web based access to Usenet. You cannot use a regular newsreader to access our service. You can, however, access Google Groups from any web browser." Google Groups Help http://groups.google.com/googlegroups/help.html#newsreader A terrific news server for text newsgroups is offered by the Freie Universität Berlin: news.fu-berlin.de http://news.fu-berlin.de/ You have to register with a valid e-mail address to receive a user name and password, and it takes about 24 hours to be given access, but registration is free and the server is very dependable. I've been using "the German server" (as it's called in the newsgroups I frequent) for about four years, and have had very few difficulties. Hope this helps! --Missy Search terms: None. Personal knowledge, I'm a Usenet junkie. |

Some friends of mine use easynews.com and they like it a lot. It costs $6 a month though. It's optimized for easy acquisition of content from the binaries newsgroups, and it goes really fast for my friends. It works for all the newsgroups but it's designed primarily for people who like the binaries. |

I work for Earthlink, so I am biased, but I think we have one of the best news farms provided by just about any national ISP. We keep all binaries for a couple weeks often now. We peer with a ton of people. Of course, if you're not hooked on your nntp client, then: http://groups.google.com/ :) |
