I'm looking for a SquidGuard-compatible whitelist of "educational"
sites. The list needs to be suitable for high school students to do
research, but not contain "fun sites". The purpose is so that
students whose internet access is restricted (generally because the
student has abused the privledge of internet use at school) can still
do research for assignments.
I'd prefer a free or low cost list. |

Hello Silly1,
What you might be looking for would be and "edulist". I will try to
find a way by which you can acquire an edulist... and I wonder if that
is an acceptable answer for you.

I have heard that term applied to lists in AU. Perhaps it is a
worldwide term, I do not know. I am in the US. If such a list has
sites like libraries, governments, etc. and is farily large, that is
the kind of list for which I am searching. Ours is a public charter
school so we have little money. That is why I am searching for a free
or no cost list. Also, the list has to work with SquidGuard.
DansGuardian does not allow the individual and group controls that
SquidGuard does, yet. If the list is compatible with some other
free/Open Source internet access control mechanism, that *may* be
acceptable if that mechanism allows access control (all sites, no
access, list one only, list two only, etc.) on a per user (*not* per
machine) basis.

You are part of a school's staff then? Based on what I found, an
edulist is not free... But I suppose an edulist is compatible with
Squidguard. Brightsparks (a web filter) uses the Squid filter on it's
system.
Maybe you could look at this link, I doubt it's the answer to your
question, so I'm giving it. It has the rates for subscription to
school filter services. I think you can only get an edulist if you
subscribe to one of these services:

I am on the governing board of the school.
The link you provided is for AU. I am in the USA. What they have
appears to be a service (note the "download rates"). What I am
looking for is a list I can import into my squidguard proxy so I can
do that kind of filtering for my school. This does not appear to be
that.
That list also seems to be specific to Victoria (AU). I do not think
it is what I need in the USA.
This information does not seem to answer my question.

Don't worry, the link I gave is not posted as an answer, so don't pay
anything yet. I haven't really found what you need, just gave a link
with an idea. Even this site doesn't seem active... I'll see where an
actual list is made available. I'm not even sure if such a service
providing a list is available in the US.
