My favorite Granny writes:
<<gran is not a black man.>>
You're in luck, Grany, because neither is the young lady of my
acquaintance who has indeed used (and regularly uses) the Magic
*Regular* Razorless Beard Remover for her naughty bits.
She's an avid and in demand practioner of the Arts of Naamah (see
"Kushiel's Dart" if this isn't quite direct enough), and she tells me
her patrons appreciate her gifts even more when she's completely
smooth. (We'll refer to her here as Phedre, in keeping with the
Kushiel's theme, and because she told me she'd smack me if I used her
name - Mundane OR Professional!)
Phedre explains that she, and others of the craft, prefer the Magic
Regular because it's gentler than the more pedestrian Nair and Neet.
Black skin tends to be dry and very sensitive, and requires a bit more
TLC than that of their caucasian bretheren, so products geared towards
black men and women are crammed with extra moisturizers and
emollients, both to make hair removal easier and to baby sensitive
skin. This has obvious advantages when one is going to use the
product on one's most delicate bits, yes?
By way of comparison, here are the ingredients for Magic Regular and
Nair Botanical (which is supposed to be the gentlest Nair formulation)
Magic
------
Water Aqua , Cetearyl Alcohol , Thioglycolic Acid , Calcium Hydroxide
, Mineral Oil Paraffinum Liquidum , Ceteareth-20 , Sodium
Metasilicate , Cocoa Seed Butter , Theobroma Cacao , PEG-40
Hydrogenated Castor Oil , Fragrance Parfum , Lithium Hydroxide ,
Pentasodium Pentetate , Polyquaternium-39 , Dimethicone , PEG , PEG-8
Stearate , Glyceryl Stearate
Nair Botanical
--------------
Water , Mineral Oil , Calcium Thioglycolate , Calcium Hydroxide ,
Cetearyl Alcohol , Sodium Hydroxide , Ceteareth-20 , Camellia Oleifera
Extract , Sunflower Seed Oil , Fragrance , Chromium Hydroxide Green
Hey!! Where are the moisturizers in Nair?? Mineral Oil and Sunflower
Seed Oil are nice, but...
Compare this to Cocoa Seed Butter, Theobroma Cacao, Hydrogenated
Castor Oil, Polyquaternium-39, Glyceryl Stearate, and Dimethicone,
*all* conditioning agents and emollients, and it suddenly becomes very
clear why Phedre prefers Magic Regular to anything else.
Phedre cautions that if you're not accustomed to nether defoliation,
it might irritate your skin a bit the first time or two, until your
skin grows accustomed to the extra attention.
Nerve.com offers some helpful advice this month, as well (but catch it
quick, because they've developed the highly annoying habit of locking
their archives away as "premium content"):
