I am looking to get information from a website that cannot be accessed
via site links. But I know it's in there somewhere.

How can I "map" out the website, and see every file on it?

If you have any questions, please ask before answering.

I don't know how to access a directory of a site, but have you tried
searching the site itself, with Google?

If the file you're interested in is about noodles, say, just
construct a Google search like this:

noodles site:www.sitename.com

and the search results should all be restricted to the specific site
you listed. If you know something about the file you're searching
for, you might be able to find it this way.

I'm looking at www.site2you.com.

$5, $10, $20, $50 dollar tip to anyone that can help me.

I can "see" about 50 or so discreet files/links on this site with
various scanning software. But I have no idea if any of these are of
interest to you (a lot of gif's for instance). Want to give us a hint
what you're looking for?

Clarification of Question by willstein-ga on 28 Jun 2003 20:41 PDT
Yes, I have too found those 50 or so gif's, but none of them were
helpful. When you access the page, look where it says "start now!".
Click that and you will see many, many templates. That, is what I am
looking for.

I can show you how to view the templates for 120 homepages and the
same number of subpages and pop-ups. (The templates are the same size
as those displayed on the page that you get when you click "Start
Now".) Is this what you are looking for?

By the way, if this is not what you're looking for, can you specify
what you want to find?

View the templates on www.site2you.com?
I am looking for those template sources, in high res, without the sample banner's.

The templates do not appear to come from site2you.com, but are
imported from another site called templatemonster.com, where they are
available at a fee. If you're looking for free copies of these
templates, I think you're out of luck. But if you want to purchase
them from templatemonster.com, the procedure seems pretty
straightforward, as described at their site.

Good luck.

No I'm pretty sure there is a way around it, we just gotta put our
minds together to figure it out.

I'll up the price a bit too.

This is something that the Webmaster can provide for, either
intentionally or accidentally. In many cases, the Webmaster or site
designer does not want the casual user to be able to see all the files
on the site. The Web server software being used (Apache? Microsoft
IIS?) provides settings that allow more or less access, and that
software itself may be more or less secure and thus susceptible to
being hacked.

The easy way for a Webmaster to allow such access is to omit a default
file in a given subdirectory (the Web server software may also need to
be set to allow the files to be seen when that is done). Careless
Webmasters do this rather often, and it can be a significant security
risk. Any person who, like the Webmaster, has FTP access to the Web
site can also see every file on the server.

I don't allow casual users to see the files on my sites. If the site
you are asking about is one of mine, the answer is that you can't do
it unless you hack your way in.

Hello Willstein,

If no link to a page exists, there's little chance it can be found via
Google.
However, you can browse the directory structure of a site by playing
around with the URL (web address). For example the following:

  http://www.example.com/info/june/

... can be changed to ...

  http://www.example.com/info/january/

... even though the webmaster intended this to be an out-of-interest
archive.
And if you see an address like this:

  http://www.example.com/info/index.html

... you can change it to:

  http://www.example.com/info/

... and if you're lucky, the webmaster has file-directory browsing
enabled. In that case, you will see a list of all files in the "info"
folder just as they are stored on the web-server -- even files not
linked from "index.html".

Another method is to use Google Cache, but only if the links to
specific content once were there. You can then enter your search, with
the site:www.example.com as suggested by pafalafa-ga. You might also
dig out some lost information by going to an Internet Archive:

WayBackMachine
http://www.waybackmachine.org/

And you might find hidden links. Open the source-code and look for
"<!--" and "-->" respectively. Oftentimes, webmasters will just put
comment-delimiters of older links to hide them from visitors, however,
the pages might still be there for a while.

Then, you can try a site's internal search. Or its sitemap.

Another option is to email the webmaster. Just look for the contact
link and request information or support on how to get there.

And, some tools (like Microsoft Frontpage) allow you to download a
complete website with all _linked_ files in it. You can then also see
a map (link visualization) of it.

I hope this helps!

Dear willstein-ga:

I think this is more in keeping with what you are looking for. It will
show you everything that lives in the www.site2you.com domain:

It appears to do exactly what you are hoping for. Let me know if you
are as impressed with this little jewel as I was and I will post it as
an answer and we'll call it a day.

Regards;
