I am trying to find out what happened to Robert E. Epps, who left his
family (wife and infant son) in Savannah, Ga., in 1895 and was never
heard from by them again. No positive clues as to where he might have
gone have ever surfaced.
Robert was born in 1868 in Twiggs County, Georgia (in or near
Jeffersonville), to Patience Ryle Epps and an unknown father.
Patiences husband Edward C. Epps had been killed in the Civil War in
1862. Edward and Patience had five children.
Robert Epps first appears in the federal census records for Wilkinson
County, Ga., in 1870 as a 2-year-old, with Patience Epps listed as
head of household. Robert moved to Savannah around 1888 and
(according to the Savannah City Directory) worked for the Central
Railroad and later an insurance company. He lived with his brother
Jefferson Davis Epps originally, then married Arabella Burley in 1890.
They had a son, also named Jefferson. Roberts last appearance in
the Savannah City Directory was in 1896. His wife Arabella began
being listed singly in 1899, and then annually as a widow in 1907.
I want to know: Where did Robert go after leaving Savannah? Did he
remarry? Where is he buried? I have been seeking these answers for
many years. |

Patience Epps was born in 1833; neither the birth month nor day are
known for her or Robert. Jefferson Davis Epps was born in Twiggs
County on April 18, 1861, and died in Savannah, GA, on June 20, 1937.
Jefferson married Catherine S. Jones but they had no children.
