I am looking for the word for taking a 3-letter word and adding a
fourth letter in the front and making a four-letter word. Then adding
a fifth letter in front and making a five-letter word. Example: Start
with "ash" add an r in front and it's "rash" add a t in front and it's
"trash"

Some time back in Parade Magazine in the Ask Marilyn section she gave
some examplesand the word I am looking for. But, I can't seem to word
my search right to find it on the Internet.

Thanks, Ron

Not all of Marilyn vos Savant's columns are available online; I
couldn't find Marilyn's discussion of this kind of wordplay, but I did
find some similar brain-teasers.

Here's a concept that is called "Word Extension" in which the new
letter does not have to be at the beginning of the word:

Another similar concept is "Trimmed Words":

This site has a puzzle called a 'Word Pyramid" in which you add one
letter at each level to make a new word:

An old game called "Word Snake" is described here:

A similar type of game which adds letter reordering to each step has
been referred to as an "add-a-gram", and a while ago was used as a
hook in a computer company's recruitment advertisements. (The
challenge was to write a computer program that, given a list of words,
would automatically generate lists of add-a-grams).

Two examples, taken from
http://www.nsl.com/papers/addagram.htm

ail + s =
sail + n =
nails + e =
aliens + t =
salient + r =
entrails + c =
clarinets + e =
interlaces + d =
CREDENTIALS

mar + c =
cram + h =
march + s =
charms + o =
chromas + n =
monarchs + i =
harmonics + a =
maraschino + n =
ANACHRONISM
