Searching for a product that may not exist... I'm trying to find out
if there is any kind of desktype product that would work like an
atomic clock, giving the time for various cities around the country...
but give the current WEATHER for a city in the US. I have seen
products that have precoded weather info, like average temps etc... or
sunrise and sunset times.. but I haven't found any product that could
sit on your desk in New York... and tell you the current WEATHER in
LA, for example. I don't know if they make those, athough the
techology should exist. Can anyone help?

Will a computer program that runs on your existing computer fit your
needs, or does it need to be a separate item?

I was hoping a separate device would exist, since it wouldn't be
connected to where your PC was or whether the PC was on or not. It
sounds like there may not be such a thing.

Unless you're interested in obtaining the info from Web sites, I do
not believe such a product currently exists. It wouldn't be hard to
develop one, but apparently nobody has.

I could not find such a device at these sites, which seem to be pretty
comprehensive for the weather gadgeteer:
http://www.wml-weathershop.de
http://www.accumall.com
http://www.americanweather.com/

I also searched through the links on this page:
http://weathercast.net/tv_inst.htm

Maybe some other Researcher will have more luck than did. For now, it
appears, your best bet is to get the info you need from the Internet
(which is where any such appliance would have to get the information
anyway).

The voice announcements on the time ticker site is pretty cool, no weather though:

If a vague idea of the weather is all you need, you might try the
Ambient Orb.
ThinkGeek sells them: http://www.thinkgeek.com/gadgets/lights/5da2/

They are out of stock at the moment, but they give you a picture of
the Orb and mention that it uses a wireless network -- no PC required.
Weather (for select cities) is one of the options that it can display
in a range of colors. I believe it uses RGB LEDs to do this.

This seems like a nifty device, but I would rather build one, run it
off the PC, and use Perl to process the data to display. Perhaps
802.11b or Bluetooth could be used.

I use www.weatherbug.com and it works great. It will even alert you
when to take the plants in!!! (when it's going to frost) or when high
winds are expected, etc. It's pretty sweet.
