Hi there,

i am looking to ascertain the dollar value of the
online market research industry for 2002 or 2003. It would also be
valuable to have
this broken down between the US and Europe.

I would need to have the information sourced from a respected source,
such as "inside research", the American Marketing Association, or
suchlike.

According to Inside Research revenue for 2002 was US$542.2 million up
60% compared with 2001. The 2003 forecast is up 20% to US$648 million.

“Inside Research’s eighth semi-annual US Online MR Spending Index of
27 US MR companies and their subsidiaries reported final revenue of
US$542.2 million for 2002, up 60% compared with 2001.

The 2003 forecast from the same reporting companies is up 20% to
US$648 million. It is one-third of the 2002 growth rate, but is still
a bright spot in an otherwise expected flat US MR expenditure forecast
as online continues to replace traditional forms of research, albeit
at a slower rate.”

“20% of online MR revenue in 2002 was accounted for by
business-to-business, with 23% forecast for 2003.”

Europe Online MR Spending Index

“Inside Research’s fourth annual European Online MR Spending Index
from 13 mostly Europe headquartered MR companies reported 2002 revenue
of €68.8 million, up 3% over 2001. The forecast for 2003 is €79.9
million, up 16%, reflecting cautious optimism for the year.”

(..)

“Growth rates in Europe are generally slower than in the US for the
last three years, particularly, 2002, suggesting that the adoption of
online research in Europe is nowhere near that of the US.”

Internet MR in the US

“Inside Research’s sixth semi-annual Online MR Spending Index from 30
US market research companies and their 27 subsidiaries reports 2001
final revenue of US$333.5 million up 51% vs 2000.

“The 2002 forecast from the same reporting companies is estimated to
be up 46% to US$488.9 million, reflecting rare optimism in the US
market research establishment and a belief that online research will
continue to replace traditional forms of research.”

“The Index companies are believed to account for an estimated 85% of
actual US total spending; making the 2001 forecast US$575 million vs.
US$392 million in 2001. Online research increases in future years to
expect to continue in the 40-50% range when the economy recovers.”

“The 2002 forecast has traditional/replacement research at 96% of the
total revenue, nearly the same as in 2001 (95%) and accounting for the
entire online market research growth.”

(..)

21% of online market research revenue in 2001 was accounted for by
business-to-business activities, and a similar ratio is forecast for
2002.

The Inside Research report concludes that the 2002 forecast of +46%
seems reasonable as online research in the US continues to grow,
primarily to replace more conventional market research (telephone,
mall and mail) as more clients embrace it and the debate on validity
wanes.”
