I am planning to have a party in a yard with a yet to be managed
mosquito problem. My Sonic Web was a waste of money. I just
purchased various Off lantern products.
A few questions before I lose the receipt and open the packages:
Do torch products work in repelling/killing mosquitos? If so what
(chemicals) ingredients should I seek? What manufacturers use the
recommended ingredients in their torches? Is DEET strictly for skin
use or does that chemical appear in torch products? Are old trees
with woodpecker holes (30+ feet above) breeding grounds for
mosquitoes?

Greetings Foggy 16,
Ultrasonic repellents are certainly useless products, as I saw on
several sites (well, they were absent from many pertinent mosquito
repellent sites). The torch products you got will certainly be more
effective. A tip is just that you should place them near the people
you want to repel mosquitoes from, and just hope that it isn’t windy.
Just as Pinkfreud recommended, Citronella would be an effective
ingredient in mosquito repelling.

DEET is certainly used on a person’s skin and clothes and not used in
torches. Avoid putting so much of a DEET product on skin though.

As for the woodpecker holes, I haven’t found any reference to them yet
as mosquito breeding places. As long as there is water in them, they
can become breeding ground for mosquitoes. The important element for
mosquito breeding is standing water. However this may not be likely
since tree trunks absorb water (if the tree is alive).

Our neighbors used to have an annual backyard party lit by torches.
Citronella torch fuel seemed to be quite effective in keeping the
skeeters away (and citronella has a rather pleasant scent in its own
right.)

I heard something on the local TV news today that might be helpful:
apparently the scent of burning sandalwood repels mosquitoes. The
owner of a local garden shop appeared on the noon news in my area,
recommending an Australian product called "New Mountain Sandalwood
Mosquito Sticks". It looks like a very thick stick of incense, and it
burns for 3 hours.
