Greetings Foggy 16,
Ultrasonic repellents are certainly useless products, as I saw on
several sites (well, they were absent from many pertinent mosquito
repellent sites). The torch products you got will certainly be more
effective. A tip is just that you should place them near the people
you want to repel mosquitoes from, and just hope that it isnt windy.
Just as Pinkfreud recommended, Citronella would be an effective
ingredient in mosquito repelling.
DEET is certainly used on a persons skin and clothes and not used in
torches. Avoid putting so much of a DEET product on skin though.
As for the woodpecker holes, I havent found any reference to them yet
as mosquito breeding places. As long as there is water in them, they
can become breeding ground for mosquitoes. The important element for
mosquito breeding is standing water. However this may not be likely
since tree trunks absorb water (if the tree is alive).
