There is a search engine/directory that allows you to search out the
people in your area that have registered an interest in a particular
subject/activity. Be it Canasta, dungeons and dragons, or bicyling. I
came across it by accident on the week of June 16th and now I can't
find it. It seemed to be very active so I am sure it is still up and
it had hundreds if not thousands of listings, so I don't think it was
brand new.

My best guess is that it was Meetup at http://www.meetup.com.

The directory claims to have 409,233 registrants. Among the 1,314
topics covered are Dungeons and Dragons, bicycling and canasta.

I hope this helps,

Exactly what I was looking for, I love this service. And fast too. I
should have posted the question before wasting the 4 hours I had
already spent looking for it before I gave up.
