Hi Geoff, I had the same problem for awhile, which had me totally baffled. Here's how I finally solved it for myself: In OE6, click on "Tools," then on "Options," and then on "Security." There is a square check box next to a rule that says, "Do not allow attachments to be saved or opened that could potentially be a virus." If that box is check, uncheck it, close OE, then reopen it, and your problem should be solved. If this method works, and you would like to accept it as the answer to your question, let me know and I will be glad to post it as the answer. If not, perhaps another Researcher will have something different for you to try. Good luck and best wishes, --Byrd |

Hi geoff57: I had the same problem too a while back. I used the method byrd has suggested and it does in fact work. This function on Outlook is sort of a blessing and a curse. While it does prevents malicious files (containing viruses) from being downloaded via e-mail, it also keeps out legitimate attachments. It should be noted, that the disabling of the option will let virus infected attachments onto your system. These attachments should be dealt with by a virus checker like (Norton Anti Virus or Macafee). Hope this comment helps. |

The method suggested by Byrd will enable you to open all attachments. It is also possible to enable opening only attachments with certain file types, which may be a bit more secure. Instructions (for Windows XP) adapted from http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=KB;EN-US;Q291387&: Click Start, point to Settings (or click Control Panel), and then click Control Panel (or switch to Classic View or View All Control Panel Options). Double-click Folder Options. On the File Types tab, click to select the file type that you want to allow, and then click Advanced. Click to remove the check mark from the "Confirm open after download" check box. --efn |
