Hi spurious-ga,

The stinky chemical is a mercaptan. You can read about it on various
pages relating to natural gas or gas leaks, including:

"What is mercaptan?"
Columbia Gas of Virginia
http://www.columbiagasva.com/safety_info/mercaptan.htm

"Important Information On Mercaptan"
Peoples Energy
