I have found information about an artist named Clifford Silsby, who
was born in 1896 and died in 1986. He is best known for his landscapes
and portraits. Is this the artist you are after. A search for "Murray
Silsby" brought no results.

You might want to double check the names, as well. If this is a
husband & wife team, the names Clifford and Murray are both typically
masculine.

Hi thorn2,

I have checked some spelling variations and have found a "Martha" who
could be who you are looking for. She is however not the spouse of
Clifford Silsby. She was a relatively unknown watercolour painter from
Boston in the early part of the 20th century.

Can you give us any more information on these artists? Where they
might be from. When they were active. How you came to know about them.
Anything would be useful in helping us narrow this down.

Thanks -

-K~

Hi thorn2

Although I have found Murray Silsby's birth and death dates and a
statement that she was Clifford Silsby's wife, I don't think there is
any free information online about her work.

So far I have only found the names of two of Clifford Silsby's
paintings and a certain amount of biographical detail to add to the
comment below. I'm not sure if this would meet your needs since you
say you have not been able to find information about their *work*.

Other things I have found include two pay-for-information databases
with both artists' names and a list of books which have material about
Clifford Silsby. Just let me know if this would be a useful answer.

To best of my knowledge both artist worked in the LA area. Husband
painted in several forms, watercolors and Oil's from what I can see in
the paintings. These are my mother-in-laws paintings and she did
leave the Long Beach area and Malibu California. We are trying to
determine for her estate, possible resale of paintings. Since she has
both artist. She has always referred to the wife as Murray, I can
check and see if that may have been a nickname. Wife of Clifford used
a unusal technique of painting on glass on the back side and you would
view paintings reversed ( if that makes sense). One special painting
is an angel and has what appears to be gold coloring. I will see if I
can get additional information from the owner. Thank You

Hello again

Sorry that we haven't been able to give you a full answer to your
question. There just is so little on the net about these artists, even
about Clifford Silsby who is better known than his wife Murray Wilcox
Silsby.

There are two pay-for-information sites which have biographical
information on the couple, but neither has records of sale prices for
their work:
http://web.artprice.com/
http://www.comanducci.it/English/index.asp

This site has some information on Clifford Silsby:
http://askart.com/artist/S/clifford_f_silsby.asp?ID=4205

Although they have a record of the sale of one painting by Clifford
Silsby, you have to pay to find out what price it fetched.
Check out their list of books where you may find out more:

Apart from that, I would suggest you might find help at the:
Los Angeles County Museum of Art
5905 Wilshire Boulevard Los Angeles, CA 90036
323-857-6000
They have some work by Clifford (not described online) and a linocut
by Wilson Silsby (Clifford's adoptive father) which was presented by
"Mr. and Mrs. Clifford Silsby".

I also found information on some minor points like an etching of
Clifford's in the collection of the Victoria and Albert Museum in
London and the couple's approximate birth and death dates. Both lived
to 90+ with Clifford dying in 1986 and Murray in 1994.

Your mother-in-law's collection sounds fascinating. I do hope you can
get some good advice from museum staff or professional appraisers on
where to go from here.

Good luck - hope you have a successful trip to California.

Regards - Leli

The following is from Norm Davies:

There was a copy of Who's Who in American Art Volume 1 565 pages
published in 1936, that lists both him and his father Wilson Eugene
Silsby. There was also a Thirty-Eighth Annual Report for the year 1945
of "The Scottish Modern Arts Association" 24 pages 8 illustrations
that lists Wilson Silsby. It was published by the Edinburgh University
Press.
Note: Wilson was listed as William and corrected in his own hand on my
copy.
