We are trying to determine the cost of a military jet doing a flyover
of our town on july 4th,

Request for Question Clarification by tutuzdad-ga on 03 Jul 2003 12:34 PDT
What kind of jet is it? What branch of service is the jet assigned to?
What town are you referring to?

Are you wanting to know the cost of the jet, or the cost associated
with the operation of the jet for such a celebration? If it is the
cost of operation, what exactly is the jet supposed to be doing at the
time of it's appearance (simple flyover, airshow, etc).

Dear soprisave-ga;

Thank you for allowing me an opportunity to answer your interesting
question.

There are several models of the F16. I won’t expect you to know the
exact nomenclature of the planes that will be in your area if you
won’t pin me down to dollars and cents. At any rate, the models
probably don’t differ that dramatically since upgrades within the same
type of aircraft are normally more feature and technology related that
performance related.

Discounting equipment, normal wear and tear and the salary of the
flight crews and ground crews involved in a flyover, the operational
costs associated with flying an F16 (outside of a combat mission) is
roughly $8,98 per hour. Presumably, since the planes will be doing
little more than taking off, flying and then landing, this figure is
primarily indicative of fuel consumption alone. If one were to try the
nearly impossible task of calculating the exact costs per hour related
to everything, including personnel, aircraft deep maintenance,
necessary equipment, fuel for ground vehicles, air and ground crew
food and salaries, etc., that would be required to enable such a
flyover, the figure would be significantly more. One estimate is
roughly $3,600 per hour (almost as much as a Boeing 727).

Below you will find that I have carefully defined my search strategy
for you in the event that you need to search for more information. By
following the same type of searches that I did you may be able to
enhance the research I have provided even further. I hope you find
that that my research exceeds your expectations. If you have any
questions about my research please post a clarification request prior
to rating the answer. Otherwise, I welcome your rating and your final
comments and I look forward to working with you again in the near
future. Thank you for bringing your question to us.

Best regards;

I apologize for the typo. My statement: "...roughly $8,98 per hour..."

should read: "...roughly $898 per hour..."

(I think my fingers may be getting fatter)
