I am trying to identify a science fiction short story that I read in
the 1970s though it may have been written earlier. I read it in an
anthology (book) rather than a magazine. The story was about a woman
who, having grown up on Earth, realizes too late that she is alien (or
part-alien). She has always looked and felt different but has tried
to conform in her appearance and behavior, e.g. stooping to disguise
her height. She realizes her mistake when she sees a man who
resembles her natural self, and who appears to be looking for someone
-- maybe her? She has changed too much to feel comforable approaching
him. Afterwards she regrets her shyness and does something unusual
(like planting sunflowers in her lawn or hanging corn doilies on her
porch)as a signal in case "they" look for her again.

Hi nmny-ga,

I used to be an avid fan of the "Twilight Zone" TV series with Rod
Serling. The story line sounds very familiar. Sorry but I have no idea
who may have written it but perhaps a search of the this site may
help:

Thanks for the idea, but none of the episode summaries match my mystery story...
