I'm not sure what you mean by "searches (which) have been deleted".

Do you mean the record of previous searches which appears in a
drop-down box as you start typing just a few letters (on some systems,
it depends on the browser you use and on the options you have chosen)?
Or do you mean the results list from an earlier search, which will
change over time as the search engine finds new sites and drops
previously found sites?

Or is it the search results you mean, the actual sites and pages you
connect to after you click on a hit's link? Are these the same as the
internet files you mention in the second part of the question, or do
you mean here files in non-web formats (such as powerpoint, .pdf, and
so on) which you once retrieved as part of an interent search?

Sorry to ask so many questions; the clearer we are about what you are
looking for, the more likely we are to supply answers to your
questions. Best, r2l

yes I am referring to searches that are deleted in the drop-down boxes
and also referring to the internet files and cookies that are deleted
in the internet option box.also referring to the history deleted in
the same box.my question is this.can I retrieve any deleted search
words or any web sites after going through the deleting process or are
they lost for good.In the future I will save any favorite sites under
` Favorites'

Wonder2,

Thanks for the clarification. I think I have an answer for you - but
it is dependent on your internet browser, and its version. Can you
tell me if you are using Internet Explorer or Netscape Navigator - or
any other browser - and also its version number (click on Help >>
About if you're not sure).

Thanks, r2l

Wonder2,

Thanks for getting back to me again. I believe that the suggestion I
was going to make is browser-version dependent, and works only with
older versions of Internet Explorer - 5 and earlier, so I'll withdraw
and leave this for another researcher. (Mainly because I leave for
vacation in a couple of hours and won't have a computer connection for
about a week; this is one I'd love to chase up and I'll be interested
in seeing if anyone does come up with anything.)

Couple of comments, though. First: it's always a good idea to add to
Favorites any sites you feel useful, now or possibly in the future. If
you don't use them, you've lost nothing except a very small amount of
memory if you do use them you may have saved a lot of time.

When you Add a Favorite, I suggest you check the suggested name : it's
usually the page title as given in the blue bar right at the top of
your screen (blue unless you have changed your display defaults).
Many titles are self-explanatory, and that's good; many titles are
useless (eg. Home Page, Welcome, Netscape, etc). Edit the title you
give this Favorite so it becomes meaningful, will mean something to
you when you find it in the list in a month or a year's time.

Second comment/ suggestion: it is worth classifying your Favorites,
making New Folders and filing new favorites into the folders as you go
along, rather than trying to file them later. That's a time saver,
because if you aren't sure later where they belong, you have to
re-visit them... Your folder titles will depend on your interests, so
could be Career, Computers, Media, News Personal, Travel, and so on -
you can sub-divide the folders too, so Travel might include Air, Land,
Sea, Hotels, Car hire, names of individual States or Countries, and so
on.

Third comment: you can also save the actual searches, using the File
>> Save As feature. This will preserve your search terms and results,
and you can come back to it whenever you want to recreate a search;
do it again (on a live search page rather than your saved search page)
and you may be able to see if there are changes, new sites found,
other sites dropped. If the results are important, as against just
the search terms, I'd suggest checking your search engines preferences
(if available) and maximising the number of hits displayed per page.
(You can extend Google's display to 100 results per page, for
instance).

Sorry I can't be more helpful; let's hope another researcher can be.
Best, r2l

Hello again,

Found a couple of free moments to investigate further. It could be
that IECacheList will do the trick for you - allow you to open the
index.dat files which contain a history of your IE exploring, even
when you think you have deleted the files. It is downloadable from
<http://www.exodus-dev.com/products/IECacheList/Default.asp>

It claims to work with IE6 and with most versions of Windows from 95
on. (The software I had earlier intended to recommend won't work with
IE6 or XP...)

Once you have your text file, you can then do a search for the search
engines you regularly use, and re-create the search terms you used.

I haven't (and won't) have a chance to try this for myself for a week
or so, thus this is just a comment, but I am looking forward to
checking it out as soon as I can.

If this is sufficient for you, I'll be happy to post this as an
answer, and if not - I hope someone else works it out. The solution
is there, I'm sure of it, just needs a little more time!

Best, r2l
