My husband will only wear those shirts with the band collar, in other
words, collarless. They have been in and out of style. When they are I
buy plenty. Now it's summer and find that he has only three LIGHT
Weight cotton short sleeve shirts. I have plenty of longsleeve ones.
Can you help me to find lightweight cotton, not gauze, shortsleeve
band collar shirts?

In addition, the company must be willing to send to Canada.

Clarification of Question by bleublue-ga on 05 Jul 2003 21:48 PDT
In addition, the shirt should button down the front -- not have a
placket. It should be washable which I didn't think I needed to
mention for a cotton shirt. Finally, most important is LIGHT weight --
it should waft rather than protect from the wind (that's a little
exaggeration but do you get the drift?)

Hi there,

After searching, this is the closest one I could find.

On Austins Big and Tall Mens Store, there is a short-sleeved,
collarless, (banded collar) black shirt for sale.
http://www.austinsbigandtall.com/newarrivals.htm
It is the second item on that page. Judging from the thinness, I
would say that it is quite light.

The others that I've found either have sleeves/are heavy/ or only has
3-4 buttons instead of all the way down, or requires hand washing.

If you would like me to look for perhaps light cotton banded collar
shirts with sleeves, then I might have more luck.

Hi there,

I've continued searching since your last comment but have had no
luck..I've exhausted all my sources at this point. I hope someone
else will be able to find these shirts for you!

Hello again bleublue,

Thank you, bleublue (I like your ID) and I hope Google Answers has
been able to help you with your very difficult quest. A note about
Deva - although I haven't ordered from them recently, I have in the
past and was very pleased with their service and clothes. I probably
still have a "Deva Dollar" around here somewhere, waiting to be used
on my next purchase.

Below is a copy of my comment, posted as an answer. The list of search
terms should be much longer but I've no way to go back and find them
now.

Your husband is one very lucky guy.
Sincerely,
hummer

Hi bleublue,

Your request is a challange, to be sure. Here is what I've come up
with, number one being the closest to your request if your husband
doesn't mind
uni-sex clothes, or number two if roll-up sleeves are ok. Number three
sounds nice and cool but they are silk.

1) Apparently you need to order their catalogue because I can't find a
way to do it online. I don't know if they'll ship to Canada - I phoned
them to try and find out but there was no answer.

Hummer was the first to reply and did a very good description of the
results presented. I found that the Henry Segal has an outlet in
Canada who will order the shirt for me. I am still not sure that this
is the lightweight shirt I need but it is definitely one I will use.
Four stars because the answers are usable, well considered and quick.
It would be five if I had found the exact shirt I need. Thank you
hummer for your nice reply too.

I'm not sure if I'm doing this correctly -- you ask me to respond to
you. Hummer your work is quite thorough but there are problems with
all. Number 1 comes the closest except for two points -- will they
ship to Canada and is the shirt LIGHT WEIGHT? I emailed them but
naturally couldn't expect an answer on the weekend. I could call them
Monday. Number 2 -- is lightweight but my husband wants a shirt that
buttons down the front, and the rollup sleeves are out too. I also
don't want cotton that I have to dryclean. Number 3 is probably a
novel possibility that I would order if everything else fails because
it's still cotton that we want. I emailed them to see if they ship to
Canada. If I don't get a better answer I will rate yours -- is that
how it works? I will also clarify my question now. Thanks for the
help!

If you're a bit handy with a sewing machine you could purchase long
sleeve shirts and then cut the sleeves down and hem them to make short
sleeve shirts. Not ideal, but a way to get what you need if you can't
find anything more suitable.

Hi delightful me -- cotton.org seems to be just a page with a lot of
business activity regarding cotton. I did a search trying several
words to find anything at all about clothing and came up with nothing.
I emailed my question to the Vermont store (which had nothing with a
band collar on their site). They have a service that finds things you
are looking for but it seemed to be directed to nostalgia type things
rather than hard to find clothes. We'll see.

alex p -- I'm not handy. In the past I had regular collars taken off
by a seamstress/tailor. They are not that comfortable to wear. The
sleeves have a different feel also. Even that might be a possibility
but since what I'm looking for is very LIGHT weight cool shirts, there
aren't many that start out being long sleeved, unfortunately. The
shirtmakers I called quoted prices in the $200 range to make one!

Am I doing the right thing to post in the "Comment area"?

Hello again bleublue,

Yes, you are doing fine with your comments.

Just a note about my original comment - I was aware that all three of
my suggestions had "problems", that is why I posted them in the
comment field (see my first paragraph). Only if/when you decide it is
suitable as an answer will I post it as an answer. Your question is
still open for all researchers to work on.

Hello bleublue,

Wow. I didn’t realize how difficult it was to find a shirt like this.
But, I may have what you are looking for.

There is a company called Deva, a cottage industry that makes
clothing. I believe it is in New England But, on their order page,
they say that they take international orders. It says “Money Orders
only for International Orders.”
http://www.devalifewear.com/
They have what they call the Schooner Shirt. It is described as,
`Relaxed styling and cool Tahiti Cloth have made this unisex shirt a
warm weather favorite for almost a decade. With a crisp band collar
and single left breast pocket. Full-cut sleeves and deep side vents
allow freedom of movement. About 31in. Long. W/D*.
http://www.devalifewear.com/Category-Unisex_Shirts.htm?AOLHelp=3f099fe0.3e.71c.1&ServerName=www.devalifewear.com&MasterShipping=%7e

It seems to fit your description, except for buttoning down. It only
buttons down part way. Because it doesn’t button all the way down, I
have posted it as a comment. If you like it and want to order it, you
can let me know, and I will post it as an answer.

I hope this helps.

Delightful me -- I will try what you suggest later tonight when I have
time.

Peggy Bill -- The Schooner Shirt has everything except it doesn't
button all the way down and I know my husband feels like a prisoner in
these. However the baseball shirt is another possibility -- at least
it doesn't have a collar, it's cool, short sleeved and buttons down.
They call it "v neck" but it's really only a slight curve. I will ask
him if he could go for this. This is maddening isn't it? I know there
is a warehouse somewhere in the world that is full of the exact shirt
I want! He has three now -- 2 light blue with stripes and one lavender
with stripes. And I bought so many at the same time! All have fallen
apart!

Sorry -- he just didn't look at the choices last night. Can you tell
me how to go about this? None of the answers completely fulfills my
request, yet because of time -- it's summer and he needs something now
-- by the time I order it will be end of the month before it comes. If
I decide to take one or two of the choices you posters found, is this
a case where I "tip"? Or do I pay the whole amount? I read about that.
I found the instructions a little obtuse or maybe it's me. Thanks --
I'll be back this evening.

Hi blueblue,

I'm sorry to hear that the directions on Google are a bit confusing.
As it stands now, once a researcher posts an answer, you will pay the
full amount ($25.00) to Google and the researcher will receive 75%
($18.75). If you send a "tip" that same researcher will receive it
(100%).

One option for splitting a question between researchers:
1) lower the price of this question (before it is answered!), for
example $10.
2) write a note to XYZ-ga to let them know to post their answer.
3) post a new $10 question and put "For ABC-ga Only" in the subject
field. ABC will find it and post their answer.

You are under no obligation to pay for an answer which hasn't
satisfied your request. However, if you are happy with the efforts, or
you have received a partial answer, or for whatever reason, it would
be perfectly alright to lower the price of this question (before it is
answered) and then let a researcher know that you'd like him to post
his answer.

I hope that is understandable,
hummer

Hi Tox -- this shirt looks pretty good, looks light too (but BIG MEN's
SHIRTS wont do) it isn't cotton though, it's linen -- but here's the
clarification: Handwashing would be OK but I wonder if those would be
those gauze shirts that I said I don't want. It's dry cleaning that I
want to avoid. You say "If you would like me to look for perhaps light
cotton banded collar shirts with sleeves" I suppose you mean long
sleeves. No, they must be short sleeved. I'm going to leave the
question open for another couple of days in hopes that somebody will
come up with what I'm looking for. Very light cotton, button down
front all the way, short sleeves, band collar, not gauze, and can be
sent to Canada.

Thank you for your thank you, bleublue, I appreciate it, and if I ever
happen upon a lightweight, button-down, short-sleeved, banded collar
men's shirt, I will be sure to let you know! One things for certain, I
know more now about banded collar shirts than I ever did before! Enjoy
the rest of your summer. Sincerely, hummer
