Dear nsmace-ga;

Thank you for allowing me an opportunity to answer your interesting
question.

The song you are speaking of is called “Moses Supposes” and was sung
by Gene Kelly and Donald O’Connor in the movie “Singing In The Rain”
in 1952.

“Personal favorites include "Moses Supposes," in which Donald
O'Connor and Kelly, lifelong friends who have hit the big time at
Monumental Pictures, antagonize the diction coach hired to improve the
actors' speaking ability with the advent of sound. Their awesome tap
dancing combined with their goofy antics and the song's clever (though
limited) lyrics ("Moses supposes his toeses are roses and Moses
supposes erroneously.") makes this a hilarious spoof of the studios'
attempts to adapt to spoken dialogue in the movies.”

Here are the lyrics:

MOSES SUPPOSES

"Moses supposes his toeses are Roses,
But Moses supposes Erroneously,
Moses he knowses his toeses aren't roses,
As Moses supposes his toeses to be!
Moses supposes his toeses are Roses,
But Moses supposes Erroneously,
A mose is a mose!
A rose is a rose!
A toes a toes!
Hooptie doodie doodle
Moses supposes his toeses are Roses,
But Moses supposes Erroneously,
For Moses he knowses his toeses arent roses,
As Moses supposes his toeses to be!
Moses
(Moses supposes his toeses are roses)
Moses
(Moses supposes erroneously)
Moses
(Moses supposes his toeses are roses)
As Moses supposes his toeses to be!
A Rose is a rose is a rose is a rose is
A rose is for Moses as potent as toeses
Couldn't be a lily or a daphi daphi dilli
It's gotta be a rose cuz it rhymes with mose!
Moses!
Moses!
Moses!
(Dance Sequence)
AAAAAAAAAAAAA!!!!"

I believe that this was written by Betty Comden and Adolph Green,
unlike the other most of the ditties which were penned by Arthur Freed
and Nacio Herb Brown.
