This has been puzzling me for a while. How might I got about
searching for banners a competitor might be using to drive traffic to
his site? Let us use the website www.anycraze.com for an example.
They are very aggressive about placing lots of ads. How might I find
all the websites they currently have ads on?

Hello renvhoek,

Thank you for your question.

I located an interesting tool to check exactly what you would like. It
checks two search engines to see who is linking to any site you
specify.

Traffic Master Resources
http://www.veilingtips.nl/autohits/wholinkstome.htm

I ran the Alta Vista Search for www.anycraze.com as you inquired and
it reported 202 hits from sites linking to this site. Clicking further
on details gave the list of sites linking:

http://www.altavista.com/web/results?q=link%3Awww.anycraze.com&kgs=0&kls=1&avkw=qtrp

Interestingly, using this tool to search with MSN showed no links!

AddMe Link Popularity is another tool for checking linked sites:
http://www.addme.com/popularity.htm

Running the same search here brought about 131 links listed at MSN and
1,377 links listed from All the Web!! Once again, click the results
for a detailed listing of all the referring sites.

And yet another can be found here:

Link Popularity
http://www.linkpopularity.com/

This search runs through Google, AltaVista and Hot Bot. Running the
identical search shows 155 links from AltaVista, 166 from Hot Bot and
111 from a Google search.

Finally, Google has the ability to check who links to you. As shown on
this search FAQ page:

"Who links to you?

Some words, when followed by a colon, have special meanings to Google.
One such word for Google is the link: operator. The query link:siteURL
shows you all the pages that point to that URL. For example,
link:www.google.com will show you all the pages that point to Google's
home page. You cannot combine a link: search with a regular keyword
search."

Running link:www.anycraze.com produced the same 111 results mentioned
earlier.

Search Strategy:

check links to a website

I trust my research has provided you with tools to do this type of
search. If a link above should fail to work or anything require
further explanation or research, please do post a Request for
Clarification prior to rating the answer and closing the question and
I will be pleased to assist further.

Regards,
