Is there any way to have Internet Explorer's "history" display actually become useful--by including the time of access, rather than just date? And/or by permitting the poor user to sort by time and/or URL, etc.? I have a suspicion this is not possible, because Microsoft wouldn't be that helpful. But there's no harm asking. This issue is not a desperate one, since I use a great program called PowerMarks to keep track of bookmarks that really matter (it stores, sorts, and permits annotation, etc.). But I'm just curious. (P.S. This is part II. In an earlier question I asked how to make the history file stop disappearing, and larre-ga answered that well...(In my case, it turned out to be a matter of space allocation, which Microsoft has coyly managed to make an issue that the average user will never be aware of! Ha ha! That company is full of great practical jokers!) bbb | |

Terrific! I have several choices for you. SHAREWARE ---------------------------------------------------------------------- AimAtSite Internet Explorer Toolbar (IE Toolbar) AimAtSite toolbar "...uses Microsoft Indexing Service to index the content of Web pages you are visiting to perform fast History and Favorites search. Unlike the built-in history search tool AimAtSite provides better performance, sorting by rank or title or date of visit, pages abstracts and flexible queries." Free Trial, $14.95 to Register AimAtSite http://www.aimingtech.com/aimatsite/home.htm WebTrack "WebTrack is a utility which indexes all the words on all the pages you visit. It's like a personal search engine for the web pages you view. WebTrack works independently of the browser, so if you use several browsers, WebTrack will create an index for all the pages you view with either browser. Besides the index, WebTrack offers you the possibility to annotate web pages and to keep a to-do list of webpages you want to revisit or you want to use the content of. WebTrack presents this functionality through a handy icon in the system tray." Free Download, $14.95 to Register WebTrack http://www.officefiler.com/webtrack/index.html FREEWARE ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ISYS Hindsite "Index and search previously visited web pages - without bookmarking them! You saw something on the web, but you can't remember where, and you didn't make a bookmark. ISYS:hindsite offers Netscape Navigator and Internet Explorer users the unique ability to perform full text searches on the contents of previously accessed web pages." A friend of mine uses this utility. I was told the installation routine is one in which you definitely need to obey the "Exit all other Windows programs" directive. Beyond that, the program works as promised. Simple registration is required, but the program itself is free. ISIS Hindsite Download http://www.isysdev.com/products/hindsite/ Search Strategy ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Google Search Terms "browser accessories" ie sort cache OR history "browser add-on" or sort cache OR history "browser toolbars" "internet explorer" OR ie Hopefully, you'll find one of these products will offer the flexibility you're looking for. to larre-ga: Excellent answer! You found some utilities that look very helpful. I tried AimAtSite first, since you put it first, and it looked great. Have not gotten it to work right, but it still looks like a good program. I'll let you know what happens, but in any case your research was excellent. I'm very sorry about the delay in thanking you & closing this file. (I began some summer courses in July; that's been cutting into my time. bbb |

Apologies are not required -- summer is its own explanation. :-) Thank you for the compliments, stars and the generous tip. If you continue to experience difficulties with AimAtSite, please detail them, and I'll see if I can provide a solution. --- l |

Well, I'm batting 0 for 2, now. I gave up on AimAtSite for a while and figured I'd try another one. Hindsite. This one's idiotic in a different way. After downloading, I opened it and had it index all my bookmarks. Took about 5 or 6 minutes, I think (I have a lot of bookmark history). Then I was able to run a search on them, yes. But the next time(s) I opened Hindsite, the program started indexing all over again. Not only that, but there is literally no way to halt that procedure (not to mention to tell it "no need to index all over again right now."). CAn't do a thing; the indexing just runs. (I've tried twice, now.) In fact, even Windows Task Manager was barely able to stop the thing. So I sent a query to the manufacturer. I cut-&-pasted the address, from the website, to make sure it was right. But my caution was waster. That was 100% useless too: Here's the message I got back: Your message did not reach some or all of the intended recipients. Subject: FW: ISYS HindSite Registration. Sent: 07 - 27 - 03 04:36 AM The following recipient(s) could not be reached: 'support\@isys.com.au' on 07 - 27 - 03 04:36 AM 550 5.1.1 <support\@isys.com.au>... User unknown Did I do something wrong? In any case, this is pathetic. Why is it that so make software makers are so inept and so out-and-out stupid about communicating that they can neither organize their material in a logical fashion, nor explain their programs' operation (or non-operation) in any useful ways?.. while the help I get through Google is so clear? Anyway, I'm getting nowhere, so far. |

Dear bbb-ga, Re ISYS Hindsite, the correct address for support is support@isys.com.au (as taken from the wesbite), without the backslash which somehow inexplicably seems to appear in the address you were using (support\@isys.com.au). |
