I'm looking for the name of a hauntingly beautiful piece of music that
I first heard in The Omen (1976), starring Gregory Peck and Lee
Remick.

Now obviously I have done some rudimentary research, so I can tell you
with some degree of certainty that it doesn't seem to be on the
official soundtrack listing for the movie.

I can however describe where in the movie it occurs, so here goes:

Right after the church scene when Damien throws a fit, Peck and Remick
are shown back in the house and they talk about Damien's never having
fallen ill etc. Now just before they start talking, Peck puts on a
record, which continues to play during their conversation.

It is this piece of music that I'm looking for. The music ends shortly
after Lee Remick goes off to bed.

$2 for anyone who can tell me the name - pls give me some kind of
proof though. (an audio snippet perhaps?) I'll pay an additional $5 if
you can send me the whole MP3 or a link to it. I really really want to
have this. :)

Can you tell me whether this is the music you're thinking of?

I will be very pleased to post an answer to your question as soon as
it can be ascertained that the correct piece of music has been
located. Here's another MP3 to try.

I hope this link doesn't overload as quickly as the other one:

Would you like me to wrap things up by posting an official answer now?
I can try to locate the music on CD also, if you'd like.

I'm pleased that we were able to track down your music so quickly! As
mentioned, it is the String Quartet in F Op. 3 No. 5, by Franz Josef
Haydn. This portion of the piece is known as the Serenade. In order to
locate MP3s for you, I used the excellent AltaVista audio search
engine:

AltaVista Audio Search
http://www.altavista.com/audio/results?q=haydn+serenade&maf=mp3&maf=wav&maf=win&maf=real&maf=othr&mad=all&mas=all&avkw=xytx

You might try the Geocities link again in a little while. Eventually
it will work again (it worked fine when I listened to it initially),
and it is a different version of the Serenade.

In case you wonder why tithers is not posting the answer (since he or
she did provide the name of the piece), tithers is not a Google
Answers Researcher, but a lay commenter (and a very helpful one!)
There is a simple way to tell a Researcher from a non-Researcher: only
authorized Google Answers Researchers' screen names are highlighted in
blue, and our names are "clickable." Clicking a GAR's name will take
you to that person's profile, where you can view ratings information
and read through previously answered questions.

Happy listening!

Exceeded my expectations. Based on the responses to my previous
questions, I was prepared to wait a while. Glad that I didn't have to.
:)
I promised a $5 tip for the actual MP3 and sure enough, here it is ..
cheers!

It's an arrangement of the second movement of Haydn's String Quartet
in F Op. 3 No.5 (the movement may well be called 'Andante Cantabile'
(being the tempo and general style of the music) or 'Serenade'). The
record that Gregory Peck puts on is played by a large number of
strings. Not sure where this arrangement or one like it can be bought,
but the original will be fairly easy to find. Hope this helps :-).

This is the reason I love the Internet. :)
Thank you both, tithers and pinkfreud. Pinkfreud, I haven't yet been
able to access the site you've provided (seems to have exceeded its
data transfer limit) but rest assured I will be trying again and again
till I get through to it. :)

I have however gone off Googling for Haydn's String Quartet in F Op.5
No.3 and found an audio snippet (though it was a horrible keyboard
only rendition), and yes, this seems to be exactly what I am looking
for.

Now if either of you gentlemen convert your comments to an answer I
will be glad to pay you!
