Where can I purchase live fireflies?

Hi cstadler, 

I'm not sure that you can buy live fireflies, and even if they are
available, your location will matter. Most insect providers have
restrictions on where the insects can be shipped.

The following restrictions are typical --

"Shipment of living materials (viruses, algae, bacteria, plants,
protozoa, insects, and other animals) into HI is restricted.
...necessary, provide us with import permits and other pertinent
documentation."

"Residents of AR, CA, NC, NV, OR, UT, and WA must apply for a permit
from your state game and fish department to receive this material."

"Sold only to schools and businesses."

As you can see, these are US restrictions. Laws may vary outside of
the US. If you could let us know where you are located (Country,
State) we may be better able to help you.

Just to let you (and other researchers) know, I have done a search of
Biological Supply companies and other insect providers have come up
empty handed.

Search terms used included: 

firefly 
fireflies 
lightning bug(s)
glow bug(s)
Lampyridae
