Hotmail is the worst for sending spam to their users. I would first
suggest you switch over to another email account such as
http://www.Popmail.com which is also free and they don't sell your
email address to vendors so you'll never receive any spam.

If you do decide to stay with Hotmail I can suggest an excellent
program called Mailwasher that will work in conjunction with your
Hotmail account. It's not free but you can download it and try it out
for 30 days absolutely free to get a feel for it and see if you like
it. It can be downloaded here
http://www.firetrust.com/index.php

The nice thing about MailWasher is it bounces back the spam to the
spammer so eventually they'll take you off of their lists. It also
allows you to blacklist people at will so if they do get thru one
time, they never will again. It's an excellent program and I've been
using it for years and love it.

Good luck and I hope you found this helpful.

Most of the links livioflores has provided you are helpful, but deal
with POP3 e-mail accounts, not web based e-mail such as Hotmail. My
best advice is to switch to a different service which already has SPAM
filting - such as Yahoo Mail (http://www.yahoomail.com). There is
little you can do to filter out SPAM that is comming through Hotmail
itself, however, I can personally attest to the Yahoo filters working
very well.

Two more general points to cut down the flow of spam:

- Some spam has a link at the bottom saying something like "Click here
to unsubscribe". Never, ever click this - it just confirms that your
email address is active and increases the amount of spam you'll
receive.

- If Hotmail allows it, go into your account options and turn off the
option to display HTML and graphics in email messages. Apart from the
fact that images contained in spam may be offensive/pornographic,
these images are downloaded from the spammer's website when you view
the email which, again, confirms to the spammer that your email
address is active.

It's probably too late for your current account, and most likely
hotmail is not the best option for you. But if/when you do get
another account, you can consider providing unique email generator
services such as sneakemail.com ... the basic idea is to give a
different generated email address to each site or service. all emails
will be funneled to your actual account with details as to which 'fake
email' address it corresponds to. then, if you receive unsolicited
email, often times you will see where it originated.

sneakemail is free... there are other non-free services as well.

import your email through a spam filter that uses a bayesian filter.
This unlike most other spam filters actually learns as you go and is
quite accurate.
www.paulgraham.com/spam.html can give details to the process as he is
in the process of creating it.
I use mozilla browser, it does bayesian filtering. my email is passed
from my various other accounts
through the filter and is filtered into junk folder from my inbox.
www.mozilla.org. they also have a stand alone mail program called
thundermail.
