I have a five year old computer - with as much memory as is possible
to install... and I have Mcaffery ( sp) Virus Protector installed on
it a few months ago... and needless to say... it has slowed the
machine up by a huge amount..Question... Are there are any Anti Virus
programs specifically for older machines, perhaps not so extensive
that would not slow the machine down so much. If so... what is the
name of the program or programs and where would I find them. Thank
you

Are you willing to purchase the software, in case it's not freeware?

Rather than looking at a different piece of software, it may be worth
looking at different ways of using the software you have. For
instance, until very recently my main PC was a Pentium Pro 200 MHz. I
also used McAfee but customised the options to make it as
inconspicuous as possible. You could do the same.

For instance, you may have it set to constantly scan your hard drive
in the background. This can inflict a serious performance hit. However
it is checking files that are already checked and thus not benefitting
you.

Why not disable the constant background scan (after running a complete
scan once to ensure that you are currently virus free). However keep
enabled the internet filter, the download scan and the floppy seek
scan, so that any new files that end up on your PC by whatever means
are checked on the way in.

This should keep your protection but speed your PC back up.

first, r u worried about long term protection against web infection?
because for "web trap" and "email trap" and functions like that u HAVE
to put in the memory. if u just want to perform check up from time to
time,
go to http://housecall.trendmicro.com/
it is a free virus scan by trend micro's PC-Cillin engine.
it is quiet good (surprisingly for a webbased free one)

also, if u want, download PC-Cillin (u'd need to register i think
after the trial, it's ur choices to do it or not) It takes much less
memory than Mcafie and such GIANT softwares.

how do i post answer?
