Comparing Internet (or for that matter any type of) statistics across many different categories can always cause difficulty. Not all of the data is necessarily gathered at the same time, using the same conditions or the same methodologies. Please remember this as you read over these statistical comparison. The data below all occurs roughly in the same time period (ie. the same year) but the methods used to acquire that data depends on the study done and this answer does not go into depth about those differences. (Please see the individual data source for such information). Likewise, not all requested information from the question is listed here. Either because it is not available or the data sets come from vastly different time periods or methods that comparison would be rendered useless. The data gathered is dated from April to August 2000. Let's first look at Internet statistics for the United States and China. According to the United States 2000 Census (August 2000) and according to the China Internet Network Information Center's Semiannual Survey Report on the Development of China's Internet (July 2000) the following information is gathered: There are 16.9 million Internet users in China There are 94 million Internet users in US coming from 42 million Internet using households There is a 1.32% Internet access penetration in China *1* There is a 41.5% Internet access penetration of US households (civilian, noninstitutional) Information on PC penetration could not be found for China There is a 51% PC penetration in the US There are 11.7 million users on dial-up access in China 37% of households (89.3% of online households) are on dial-up access in the US There are 2.58 million users on broadband access in China 4.4% of households (10.7% of online households) are on broadband access in the US In China an additional 2.56 million are on both dial-up and broadband access and are not included in the above numbers. So the numbers above can be adjusted to 14.26 million on dial-up and 5.14 million on broadband in China. Information on type of broadband could not be found for China 50.8% of broadband access is via cable modem in the US 33.7% of broadband access is via DSL in the US 4.6% of broadband access is via wireless/satellite in the US 10.9% of broadband access is via telephone-based connections (ie. ISDN) in the US For China's statistics in July 2000, please visit http://www.cnnic.net.cn/develst/e-cnnic200007.shtml For United States' statistics in August 2000, please visit http://www.census.gov/prod/2001pubs/p23-207.pdf Now let's look at Internet statistics for several major cities in both the United States and China. The data on Beijing and Shanghai is from the same report that the country data for China is from. The data for New York, Los Angeles and San Francisco is from a Nielsen/NetRatings report. Please view findings from that report at http://www.newsfactor.com/perl/story/2966.html There are 3.16 million Internet users in Beijing There are 1.82 million Internet users in Shanghai There are 4.3 million Internet users in New York There are 3.6 million Internet users in Los Angeles There are 2.2 million Internet users in San Francisco There is a 22.89% Internet access penetration in Beijing *2* There is a 12.37% Internet access penetration in Shanghai *3* There is a 53.75% Internet access penetration in New York *4* There is a 37.82% Internet access penetration in Los Angeles *5* There is a 61% Internet access penetration in San Francisco Those are the statistical comparisons for China, United States and some major cities. If this is not to the extent you sought, please request an Answer clarification and request additional information or open an additional question. Internet access penetration determination required a population statistic. This is where those population statistics were taken from: *1* This number is based off a population statistic from the CIA World Factbook http://www.cia.gov/cia/publications/factbook/geos/ch.html *2* This number is based off a population statistic from a CNN.com article quoting key statistics for Beijing (2000) http://www.cnn.com/2001/WORLD/asiapcf/east/07/12/beijing.profile.post/ *3* This number is based off a population statistic from a GWBN news clip about broadband rollout http://216.239.35.100/search? q=cache:U6jfPi8NANoC:www.gwbnet.com/CaseStudies/+shanghai+population+july+2000&h l=en *4* This number is based off a population statistic from the City of New York's Department of City Planning (April 2000) http://216.239.35.100/search? q=cache:TAv6zBlVpfcC:www.nyc.gov/html/dcp/home.html+%22new+york% 22+population+april+2000&hl=en *5* This number is based off a population statistic from Regents of the University of California webpage (2000) http://countingcalifornia.cdlib.org/counties/losangeles.html Additional information: China Internet Network Information Center's Semiannual Survey Report on the Development of China's Internet http://www.cnnic.net.cn/develst/repindex-e.shtml United States Census Bureau: Computer Use and Ownership http://www.census.gov/population/www/socdemo/computer.html US Broadband Statistics http://cyberatlas.internet.com/markets/broadband/article/0,1323,10099_766351,00. html Search terms used: US Census internet usage china population july 2000 beijing population july 2000 shanghai population july 2000 "san francisco" internet users stat "new york" population april 2000 "los angeles" population april 2000 |

This is an interesting report from the Wireless Internet World 2001 conference in Singapore : http://www.nepalnews.com.np/contents/englishmonthly/businessage/ 2001/june/world.htm It also goes into detail about China, and how it has 22 million internet users today, and is expected to be over 100 million by 2004. |

Hi, You might want to look at the CNNIC survey report on internet development in China http://www.cnnic.net.cn/develst/e-index.shtml and these links would be helpful too: http://www.virtualchina.com/archive/infotech/analysis/chinanet-cnnic-1.html http://www.tradeport.org/ts/countries/china/isa/isar0004.html Cheers, baju |

hmm, China is going to fast to be captured in statistics very well. The number of actual Internet users was 33.7 million by the end of December 2001, according to the already quoted China Internet Network Information Center (CNNIC) http://www.chinabiz.org/articles/show.asp?id=1510 |
