The United States if it's broken into regions of the US that would be
interesting. If there is specific data in referance to the Army or
Military that would also be helpful.

Hello dhughl~

Unfortunately, adultery statistics for the United States are hotly
debated, for a variety of reasons. Number one, some people may have
reasons to lie during studies. Number two, some studies do not take
into account a persons entire life, but only their current marriage.
That said, here are some statistics generally felt to be accurate.

According to “Affair Statistics” by Karen S. Peterson of USA TODAY
(http://www.divorcereform.org/mel/raffairstats.html ):

* About 24% of men (and 14% of women) have had sex outside of
marriage.
* People are less likely to have affairs with co–workers, and more
likely to have affairs with friends (57%) of at least six months.
* About 65% to 85% of men have never had an extramarital affair.
* Only about 0.5% overall have had multiple affairs.

This study was made up of 55% women, 45% men.

Bonnie Eaker Weil, the author of “Adultery: The Forgivable Sin”
) agrees that not every man that cheats will do so again. “I have a
1 percent relapse rate among my patients, and that 1 percent rate is
for people who had a bio-chemical craving for connection,” she claims.
(“Lying About Past Sexual Relations Common,”
http://freedomantiviral.com/lying_about_past_sexual_relation.htm )

Some studies show much higher statistics—as many as 50 to 65% of men
having affairs, but do not give statistics about multiple affairs.
(“About Lovers & Other Strangers,”
http://www.aboutlovers.co.za/stats.html ) An interesting trend is that
statistics given by authors of books about adultery seem to be higher
than those statistics quoted by those conducting studies that won’t be
published in book form.

As for statistics regarding the U.S. military and adultery, the
figures are even more vague. Not surprisingly, the military doesn’t
particularly want to publish their stats.

“The number of Air Force personnel court-martialed on adultery charges
has more than quadrupled in the past decade,” says the Associated
Press . “While most of them are men, women are being accused in
increasing numbers, statistics show…Last year there were seven
[prosecutions against women], compared with 60 against men…In 1987
adultery was among the charges in 16 Air Force courts-martial—all
against men, according to statistics provided by the Air Force public
affairs office. The total leaped to 39—all men—in 1988 and held fairly
steady until last year's 67 cases against men and women.” (“Adultery
Prosecutions Up for the Military,”
http://www.beloitdailynews.com/597/adlt15.htm )

I hope this helps!

What percentage of remarries are successful? When the man or women who
has the affair marries the individual that they had the affair with.
Are there stats on Hispanic/Latin American individuals or a good
referance? I did find a Psy.D. dissertation from Dr. Layton-Tholl that
was helpful with the original question.

The focus is on making a marriage work after the affair. How many
don't work and end? Is there a study that states one year out, five
years out, or ten years out after the affair.

Hi again dhughl~

Another interesting question! :) But it is really a new question, and
needs to be posted separately. If you'd like me to try to answer it,
you can put my name in the subject line (example: For Kriswrite:
Remarriage).

Good luck!
