Question ID: 226323
I am looking for reliable auto repair place that specializes in
foreign cars especially Jaguars. I have a 1985 Jaguar Series III XJ6.
Looking specifically in the Boston area. Please
forward contact information including phone number and any source
detailing commentary about reasonableness and reliability. I hesitate
to take it to a Jag dealer due to expenses etc. My car
is overheating and occasionally acceleration wont work (ie even after
pressing the "pedal to the metal" car wont go over 50 mph. Would
appreciate any insight on repair place and any suggestions on what
could potentially be wrong with the car. Has a new water pump / body
and interior in superb condition /new suspensions / tyres /stereo etc.
Any thoughts on selling strategies for the car would be a plus. As
any jag lover would know its a bummer trying to sell it. My one other
option is to repair the car and ship it overseas. Do you know where
one would get quotes to ship a car overseas/custom permission etc.

I could be wrong but this is what I think are the problem:

"My car is overheating"

This problem is likely caused by dirty radiators. You can go to a
radiator specialist to have it cleaned inside and out. The procedure
takes about 2-3 hours depending on the skill of the person doing it.
They will be able to reinstall it immediately.

"occasionally acceleration wont work (ie even after pressing the
'pedal to the metal' car wont go over 50 mph"

The transmission is usually the problem in this case. It's likely that
you need to change the clutch disk and probably the pressure plate. It
wouldn't hurt if you get a top overhaul and have the pistons checked
and piston rings replaced. Given the age of your car, by this time,
these parts are worn out. Any skilled mechanic can do this with the
proper tools and parts.

"Any thoughts on selling strategies for the car would be a plus. As
any jag lover would know its a bummer trying to sell it."

Don't sell it. If you love it keep it. Your car is man-made and that
means it's repairable.

Your problem of low speed or sluggishness could be caused by your
carburettor. Have it serviced by a competent workshop, or buy a "carby
kit, consisting of mainly gaskets and "O" rings. Make sure it`s not
sucking air except through the throat, and also make sure your air
cleaner is clean and not clogged. check your mixture screw as well.
Hope this is of some help. If you don`t want the Jag, send it to me.
