I have typed out a document in Microsoft Word on Windows 98. The
paragraphs are numbered differently. They numbers are not in sequence.
It has come to pass that although I used indent key to give space from
the number to the text, the writing doesn't fall into a vertical line
as it normally should. Would you kindly help me out so that I can get
a neat document with all writing in the paragraphs falling in the same
vertical line. Thanking you in anticipation of a good solution.

Hi fat55-ga,

To control the automatic numbering of paragraphs, use the "Bullets and
Numbering" dialog from the Format menu and select the "Numbered" tab.
The second and third boxes there give you choices of Arabic numbering
with periods or right parentheses after the numbers. Whatever you
choose applies to the current paragraph or all currently selected
paragraphs.

To straighten out the number sequence, click on the first paragraph,
open this dialog, select the "Restart numbering" radio button, and
click OK. Then select all the other paragraphs, open this dialog,
select the "Continue previous list" radio button, and click OK. If
you want to have more than one numbered list in a document, just set
"Restart numbering" on the paragraph where numbering should restart
from 1.

The automatic numbering puts in a tab character between the number and
the beginning of your text. The text in different paragraphs can
start in different vertical columns because that single tab can go to
different places depending on the width of the number text. That is,
a paragraph with a narrow number may use the first tab stop, while a
paragraph with a wide number may use the second tab stop and so start
the text in a different place. It can also happen that the tab
character does not generate much empty space and the text starts right
after the number. To fix these problems, adjust the tab settings for
all numbered paragraphs so that the first tab stop is a reasonable
distance to the right of the end of the longest paragraph number. It
will probably be most convenient to to control this through the
paragraph style. If you set this tab stop properly, with none before
it, all the text beginnings will line up and not be too close to the
preceding number.

This advice is based on Microsoft Word 97. If you have a different
version, it may or may not apply.

Does this answer your question adequately?

Hi Fat55 ~

I think you're asking how to arrange a paragraph in what is called flush and hang?

#123 Flush and hang looks like this when it is printed
out. It's a printer's term which means that the
first line of a paragraph goes flush to the
left margin, and everything else hangs under a
      certain indent.

Is this what you're asking about?

Thanks,
Serenata
