I understand that in the early days after the American Revolution, it
was not at all clear that the country would be a republic, and that at
some point a delegation of distinguished Americans was sent over to
Europe to see if any prince (or princess?) might be willing to be a
replacement king (or queen) of America. Apparently, however,
everybody turned the job down. My questions are:
(a) which year did the delegation go over, and how long did it stay in
Europe?
(b) who were its members?
(c) which countries and royal families did it visit?
(d) what reason(s) were given for refusal?
and, of course, where can one read about these events?

Greetings Chris4,
I have decided to hazard my answer since these sources I list are the
only references on the Internet I could find of royal personalities
offered the chance to be a monarch of America. Based on them, four
gentlemen approached Charles III Stuart to be King of America, but he
turned it down. The third website listed below lists all the other
candidates, though I could only assume if this same delegation of four
men visited them.
I could not fill the other specific details you mentioned in the
question (like the length of stay in Europe), but I hope the answer is
enough.

The Forgotten Monarchy of Greebriar County, West Virginia
http://www.electricscotland.com/history/america/monarchy.htm
- Mr. Galloway of Maryland, two Sylvester brothers from Pennsylvania
and Attorney Fish of New York made up the delegation. They visited
Charles III Stuart in 1782 in Florence.

Royalty offered the chance to be the Monarch of the United States

- Prince Heinrich of Prussia and Prince Edward, Duke of Kent, were
also candidates for the Monarch of the United States. Yes, George
Washington was offered the monarchy, and things seemed set for him to
have it, but he declined.

These websites say that this quest for an American Monarch is
documented in the US Archives.

Techtor,
Thank you. I think you have probably got to the bottom of this. I
had heard stories that the delegation was composed of some rather more
famous people (Adams, Franklin, Hamilton, etc.), but perhaps that was
a later embellishment.
What are the Manorwater Papers?
Sorry about the delay in replying. I have been on vacation - in
England. No one I spoke to there had heard of this event.
Regards,
Chris4

There was a well-documented movement to offer the kingship to George
Washington, and an attempt in 1783 by some pensioners of the
Continental Army to make Washington king, but Washington was steadfast
in opposition.
