Hi there rivet~

The term ¡§Uncle Tom¡¨ comes from the anti¡Vslavery novel ¡§Uncle
Tom¡¦s Cabin,¡¨ written by Harriet Beecher Stowe and first published
in 1851. In this novel, the character Uncle Tom is a ¡§dignified old
black slave. The story describes Tom's experiences with three
slaveholders. Two of them¡XGeorge Shelby and Augustine St.
Clare¡Xtreat Tom kindly. But the third, Simon Legree, abuses Tom and
has him brutally beaten for refusing to tell where two escaped slaves
are hiding. Tom dies from the beating. A subplot of the novel tells
about the family of slaves¡XGeorge and Eliza and their baby¡Xwho flee
to freedom in Canada. In one famous episode, Eliza, clutching her
baby, escapes across the frozen Ohio River from pursuing slave
catchers. Two other characters in the book are Topsy, a mischievous
black girl, and Little Eva, St. Clare's young daughter. The death of
Little Eva is another famous episode.¡¨ (¡§Uncle Tom¡¦s Cabin,¡¨ World
Book Encyclopedia: http://www.worldbookonline.com/wbol/wbAuth/jsp/wbArticle.jsp
)

Once slavery become illegal in the United States, the novel largely
went unread, except for in abridgements. Unfortunately, this lead to
distorted ideas about the novel. Hence, the term ¡§Uncle tom¡¨ came to
mean a black man who cow¡Vtows and behaves humbly or fearfully in
front of whites in order to gain favor with them.

To say someone is a ¡§Jewish Uncle Tom,¡¨ then, is to say they are
Jewish, but submissive to Gentiles (or possibly other groups holding
power) in order to gain favor with them. Obviously, who might and
might not be called this derogatory name is a matter of opinion only.

I can find no reference to anyone calling Woody Allen a ¡§Jewish Uncle
Tom¡¨ (or accusing him of ¡§Jewish Uncle Tomism¡¨) online. In fact,
the term rarely appears online identified with a real¡Vlife person,
probably because it¡¦s considered so offensive. By far the most common
usage for the term is Jewish Americans who don¡¦t automatically side
with Israel on all subjects, but ¡§go along with¡¨ American policy
(see ¡§Calling The American Ambassador ¡¥Jew Boy¡¦¡¨ as an example:
http://www.me-ontarget.com/archarticles/020111callingusambassadorjewboy.htm
. You¡¦ll find the term in the fourth paragraph.).

I hope this helps ļ

Greetings Rivet:

The term might be compared to the Jews in the WWII death camps who
worked for the Nazis against other Jews. I'd suggest asking an
historian if the term "Uncle Tom" would apply in that case. That's
about the only example I would consider as a valid application of the
term.

PS I did locate someone using the term to identify certain
individuals:

"Joseph Farah? Thu Mar 15th 17:18:38 2001

"Guys, I don't see what the big deal is about this guy. So he is an
Arab Likudnik. So what. The Jewish "Uncle Tom's" we have (Ilan Pape,
Chomsky, et. al.) are treated as "enlightened progressive friends of
peace" for betraying their people. If we use betrayal as the standard,
then why is Farah not also considered "enlightened"?"

Hope this helps.

Sometimes the term "self-hating Jew" is used to mean more or less the
same thing.

A term similar in meaning to "Jewish Uncle Tom" is "ham on rye,"
meaning "Jewish on the outside, Gentile on the inside." This parallels
the slang term "Oreo" for African-Americans who are said to be "Black
on the outside, white on the inside."

Here's an instance of "ham on rye":

"Although at a few cocktail parties back in Manhattan he had been
confronted by a belligerent member of the tribe accusing him of trying
to pass, of being a ham-on-rye, Jewish on the outside and goy on the
inside."
