Question ID: 226513
I downloaded some true type fonts for installation into GIMP in X11
environment on Mac OSX. However, I cannot get X11 to recognize the
font path. [/usr/X11/lib/fonts/truetype]. How do I get GIMP to show
the true type fonts?

I am using Mac OSX environment.

Hello Pavansut,

Perhaps the easiest way to add True Type fonts to X11 on Mac OS X is
to get a copy of FreeType
  http://freetype.sourceforge.net/index2.html
installed on your system. You could follow the instructions from this
site, or I could describe a method using a package manager such as
Fink (and its companion FinkCommander). How would you like to proceed?

I would prefer to use fink or fink commander.
Thanks

Which X11 do you have? Apple's?

In that case, it expects TrueType fonts in
/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/TTF/.
You can probably hack configuration files here and there to make it
accept fonts, although Apple's X11 doesn't have a real XF86Config
file.
It might also work if you put fonts in /Library/Fonts/.

Zarby-ga: thanks for your comments. Yes, I am using apple x11.
there are a lot of true type fonts already in /Library/Fonts, but gimp
is not reading them.
I created the TTF directory per your suggestions, but haven't had
success.

Its interesting that there isn't a simpler solution to this problem.
Afterall, after portng GIMP over to Mac, for techies, this should be a
simple problem to solve!

Appreciate your help.

Zarby-Ga:

I followed your instructions for installing truetype fonts, but for
Type1 fonts, and viola! the trick seems to work! I installed the
fonts in /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/Type1/ folder and gave the xset +fp
/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/Type1/ command and the next time I opened
GIMP, I could see the Type 1 fonts! Still haven't figured out how to
install the TrueType fonts, but at least I have a few more now than
the default fonts.

Thanks for your help!!

X11 wont recognize TTF fonts by default ( unless you run XFree 4.3.0
which uses Xft2 & Fontconfig backend for font configuration ). So you
have to get "mkttffontdir" program and run this where you put TTF
fonts like /usr/X11/lib/fonts/truetype after this just restart X then
thats all.
