Hello Doug!
Thanks very much for your question!
I posed your inquiries to Deborah Locker, the media relations officer
for the International Spa Association (ISPA). She tells me that her
organizations research is done nationally, but theres no reason to
believe that Chicago spa goers would differ from those in other
regions. ISPA publishes the Spa Users Report, which you can buy for
$250 if youre a member of ISPA, $500 if youre not. The 2003 edition
will be out in October. However, she generously gave me the basics
from the last published study, the 2001, for free.
That study showed the following demographic information on
spa users:
Generally, they are married with no children under the age of
18 living in the household. They are college graduates or higher,
employed full-time. Here are the average ages:
Day Spa 41 years
Resort/Hotel Spa 44 years
Destination Spa 45 years (The destination spa would be your
highest end spa.)
Average annual household incomes can also be broken down by
the type of spa:
Day Spa - $96,000
Resort/Hotel Spa - $122,000
Destination Spa - $125,000
Locker says 21% of spa users are men, and the rest, obviously, are
women. The 2001 report does not include information on disposable
income or other spending habits, however, the upcoming 2003 report
will. You can buy the 2001 report by going to:
http://www.experienceispa.com/
There is another group, the Day Spa Association, which has a
report titled "The Demographics of a Day Spa Goer." They
wouldnt divulge their information for free, but you can buy
the 30 page report for $95 if youre a member, $125 if youre
not. You can phone the DSA at 201-865-2065 or go to their website:
http://www.spaassociation.com.
The DSA report was done nationwide in late fall of 2002. It does break
down its information by state. Contact info for the Day Spa
