Hi Missy, in my dreams I would like to work in my present field as a
library paraprofessional in Hawaii, should I attempt to do this and if
so, how?
As with any relocation and job change there are a number of
challenges, but given the current legal and economic situation in
Hawaii, the challenges of relocating there are compounded. Since most
library workers are governmental employees, the biggest challenge
recent movers have when attempting to enter the library job market in
Hawaii is complying with Title 78, Section 1; part C of the Hawaii
Revised Statutes. http://www.capitol.hawaii.gov/hrscurrent/Vol02_Ch0046-0115/hrs0078/HRS_0078-0001.htm
Does HRS 78-1C preclude a prospective employee from searching for a
position in Hawaii before they have resigned from their current
position in the mainland? What is the best way to comply with HRS
78-1C in the shortest amount of time?
If a prospective employee is able to satisfy HRS 78-1C, they are still
subject to the challenges of finding work. Funding problems within the
Hawaii State Library System (HSLS) and the University of Hawaii
Library (UHL) are well documented, see:
http://starbulletin.com/2003/03/02/news/story2.html and
http://starbulletin.com/2002/04/25/news/story13.html , how have those
budget reductions impacted paraprofessional employment within the
libraries?
It is my understanding that HSLS and UHL hire paraprofessionals from
the same pool of applicants and when that hiring pool is opened the
announcement is made here:
http://www.ehawaiigov.org/dhrd/statejobs/html for that reason, there
are no paraprofessional jobs listed here:
http://libweb.hawaii.edu/uhmlib/libinfo/jobs.html , is that correct?
Is waiting until paraprofessional positions at HSLS/UHL are posted at
Ehawaii.gov the only way to be considered for HSLS/UHL jobs? How long
is the wait, typically?
Assuming that a prospective employee meets HRS 78-1C and finds an open
position, would they have a reasonable chance of getting hired without
a college degree but with more than 10-years of academic library work
experience?
How do people at the library paraprofessional pay grade afford the
cost-of-living in Honolulu? What are the typical living arrangements
of those workers in Honolulu?
You are probably wondering why I would direct a very detailed question
about Hawaii to someone in Ohio. First of all I am not aware of any
researchers with first-hand knowledge of this topic. Secondly, the
question is basically an advice (rather than a knowledge) question; I
think credibility is extremely important with advice questions. When
evaluating the soundness of advice (before you actually take the
advice) one has to rely totally on reputation. Based on my experiences
with Google Answers, Missys reputation is second-to-none.
Finally, given GA FAQ #1 paragraph 3 relating to questions seeking
advise and questions without clear answers, if Missy would prefer not
to address this question, I understand. Please post a comment to that
effect and I will withdraw the question. |
