I'm looking to buy videos that teach French and are fun for kids ages
4-12. I don't care if it's all in French, or if they have an
English-speaking narrator. As long as it's fun. Is there a French
Sesame Street, or the equivalent? If you can find materials that are
aimed at young French children, that would be ok, too, especially if
videos aimed at teaching French to foreign kids are not widely
available.
We currently own 3 titles in the "Moustache the cat" series, as
well as Brainy Baby - French, and Bilingual Baby - French. All of
these are very good.
It would be great if you could provide hyperlinks or phone
numbers to a sales department, with a brief review, and, if possible
consumer feedback to the product (a la Amazon).

Thanks!

Dan89 -

We've had ordered books from Amazon's French site but you'll need a
multi-region DVD player if you try that strategy for video (tapes are
all in SECAM format, so I'm assuming that is out):
http://www.amazon.fr/

Our other complaint is that Amazon's French operation resells e-mail
addresses, so that now I get spam in English and French.

The U.S. is region 1 and Europe, Japan and the Middle East are region
2 under the film industry's scheme to control distribution
internationally. This website lists multi-region
DVD players, should this be an option:
Techtronics.com
"Multi-region DVD players - Summary" (undated)
http://www.techtronics.com/uk/shop/50-000-dvd-summary.html

But let's get on to sites with VHS and U.S. distribution:

TravLang has a good collection of tapes for children, including
TinTin, Asterix and a bi-lingual tape for babies (which may be the
one that you have already):
TravLang Language Store
"French Children's & Instructional Videos"
http://www.multilingualbooks.com/tlstore/frenchvid.html#chvid

There are a limited number of offerings from Amazon's U.S. site:
"Bonjour Les Amis"
http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/6303052827/002-8640965-7226415?vi=glance

This website also has an excellent collection of DVDs, video tapes,
games and other products :
InFrench.com
Home Page
http://www.infrench.com/Merchant2/merchant.mv?Screen=SFNT&Store_Code=C

PBS has a series called "French in Action" that will be re-broadcast
this fall. It's a 52-week series that follows a pair of teenagers,
Mireille and Robert, through typical situations in school, home and
community. Narrated in English, it's really for older students:

And don't forget that the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation offers
programming in French, with a number of children's videos available:
Radio-Canada
Catalog
http://www.radio-canada.ca/nosproduits/

A final resource is TV5, the French international channel available on
many cable systems (Comcast, our provider, provides it for an extra
$9.99 per month). There are a couple of TV5 weblinks, including one
in Canada:
TV5
Quebec Canada

TV5
Home page
http://www.tv5.org/TV5Site/programmes/accueil_continent.php?tps=1057950111

Google search strategy:
French + video + children
French + video + children + PBS
French + video + children + Canada
TV5 + France

I've heard wonderful things about the "Muzzy" series:
