Question ID: 228010
How can I convert an IP address and have it be presented on a website
with the city? This site http://www.connor-family.net does.

How do they do that? I have asked the owner of the site, but he did
not set it up, a friend of his did and he does not know how he did it.

Hi mwalsh:

Thanks for the question.

I went and viewed the source code for the connor family's website, and
the line of code that does the IP translation is:

<script language="Javascript"
src="http://map.geoup.com/geoup"></script>

This service is apparently free to use, as you can see from the
following website:

Yahoo! Groups
URL: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/GreatGear/message/4909

You can also place a flag of the IP's country with:

<script language="Javascript"
src="http://map.geoup.com/geoup?template=flag"></script>

Source: http://www.todayload.com/effect/other/detail.htm

So, to add this fuctionality to your website, you simply need to add
that code to the body of your page.

Hope this helps.

Greetings, mwalsh!

I might suggest that you use only the country name returned by this
script, as the city name will often be inaccurate. Frequently, the
city will be the city of the headquarters or network node of the
Internet Service Provider used by the visitor, and not where the
visitor actually lives (the greeting I received from the Connor Family
is definitely NOT the U.S. city in which I live).

You might try temporarily implementing the script using the city, and
have your friends and relatives all over the world access your site,
then report back to you whether it greeted them with the proper city.

Regards,
