I am tired of not having a web site. I'm seeking a web-hosting
service that's under $15. a month, free set-up. The main need I have
is that I can simply transfer my excel files to the site. Since I
work on my stuff every day, it's critical that all I have to do is
click onto a button to transfer my day's revisions to the site. This
site MUST be online, so that anyone can find it.

To satisfy this question satisfactorily, you must have personal
knowlege of the service you recommend. I will not, under ANY
circumstances accept any recommendations with which you do not have
prior experience with. All my work is excel files. That's all I
have, excel files.

Hi bluestreak!

1. How much space do you need? (How big are those Excel files?)
2. How much traffic (GB/month) do you expect?

Thank you.

Hi idcdc,

My main file is about 1000 KB. I'd like to also have 2000 KB of extra
space to put other files on it. I don't think that is a lot of space.
I don't have any photos or graphics.

idcdc,

I'm not expecting much traffic at all. A hundred hits a month would
be beyond belief, like a miracle. Probably closer to a couple dozen
hits a month. But who knows? I'm being cautiously conservative. Any
good leads for me?

Hi bluestreak.

First of all let me thank you for your clarifications. They were very
informative.

Now about your question. I'm currently using what I consider to be a
very good hosting service (for my own website). I used about 4 hosting
services in the last 2 years and I do have some experience with this
sort of things.

I do talk from my personal experience, but, unfortunately, if I would
tell you my website's domain I could be identified. The Researchers
are not supposed to reveal personal information such as their real
names, so I will tell you about my experience, but not reveal my
wesbite's domain.

To get to the point: http://www.memenethosting.com is the website of
the hosting service.

I'm on a Linux server so I will recommend you Linux
(http://www.memenethosting.com/linux.html). I can't recommend their
Windows based plans because I've never used them.

Their cheapest Linux plan is only $5/month (free setup), but it offers
50 MB of space and 1GB of traffic. That should be enough for you at
the moment. If I may add, with about 10$ you can also register your
own domain. I can recommend you this registrar
(http://www.godaddy.com).

Now about my experience with Memenethosting:

I've only had one problem, but it was not their fault. It was my own.
Something strange with my browser. However, I'm mentioning it because
I have to tell you that they were polite and really tried to help,
although there was nothing they could've done to help me. Also I had a
few questions for them back when I started using their service and
they were very helpful.

Most webmasters say that the most important thing about a hosting
service is fast support. And they offered it to me. Also, I have never
found my website inaccessible. The e-mail works OK too. To put it
short, I can't complain about anything at all.

You can easily upload your files using the "File manager" feature
included in the website Control Panel, or you can use FTP to transfer
your files even easier.

I recommend you FTP Explorer: http://www.ftpx.com/download.html

If you'd like to chat with people in the hosting industry I recommend
you (http://webhostingtalk.com)

If you have any questions before rating my answer, please post them.
I'd be more than happy to answer them.

Respectfully,
ldcdc-ga

idcdc,

You have done a very nice job. I am very encouraged by what you said.
Are you sure that I can upload excel files? And also, since I work
on my files daily, how easy is it to upload my day's revisions &
additions? Is this done by a simple click of a button, as in my
present save to file windows buttom on my excel spread sheet? And is
it easy to communicate with their technical support guys?

Hi bluestreak!

I'm not exactly sure what you mean with "Are you sure that I can
upload excel files?". What I can tell you is that in the Terms of
Service there's no restriction regarding excel files. Also, I uploaded
an excel file myself. Everything was OK. I was also able to download
the file. Everything worked just fine.

If you will use an FTP software like the one that I recommended,
uploading files is going to be just as easy as copying files from your
hard disk to a floppy disk. FTP Explorer also looks very much like
Windows Explorer. Because your files are rather large, it might take a
few minutes to transfer them to the server, depending on your type of
Internet connection (I use a dial-up connection and it's rather slow).

Now, if you decide to use the website's Control Panel -> File Manager,
it can take a bit longer because the interface is not very
user-friendly. However it shouldn't take very long.

Also, you can save the file directly to the server. I think you might
like this method.
To do this choose File->Save As... (in Excel)
Then type this: ftp://ftp.yourdomain.com/public_html/desiredfilename.xls

"yourdomain" and "desiredfilename" are generic names of course, you'll
have to change them appropriately.

"public_html" is the folder where casual web surfers have access. I'm
supposing that you want to offer the files to the public, but you can
save the file in a folder of your own choice.

You'll then be asked to login (input the username&password for FTP
access). Then you click one or two OK buttons as required and the file
will be saved. I know it's more than one click, but that's as fast as
possible with today's technology and software.

Oh! Always have a copy of your site on your hard disk. Bad things can
happen and you'll still be able to smile if you have a back-up.

Personally, I prefer to use FTP Explorer to upload files. I think it's
the best solution because it's fast and easy.

The support is given by e-mail, but, from what I recall they also use
ICQ. But then again, maybe I'm wrong. There's also the forum, but I've
never used it because I don't think it's efficient.

If something is not clear, don't hesitate to ask.

Respectfully,
ldcdc-ga

idcdc,

I have registered for this website. I will let you know in a few days
if I can deal with it in an easy way. Stay tuned. I expect to do
fine.

Hi idcdc. So far, no luck whatsoever. I have peppered these people
to call me and walk me through their setup process. They simply will
not email me or call me back. So I don't know what to make of them.
They have no tech support that I can see. None. I've sent them now
about 4 emails pleading with them. All I'd need is about an hour of
their time to set me up! And I can't get their attention!! How
frustrating. In a week I will cancel my subscription and keep looking
elsewhere. I was so hopeful! Dammit!!! But I thank you for trying
so hard for me idcdc. bluestreak

Hi bluestreak.

Indeed frustrating. For me is also surprising. It puts me in a very
unpleasant situation too, because I'm really sorry this happened to
you. As I told you, I never had a problem with them. Of course, I will
ask them a test question. Maybe it's time for me to start searching
for a new host too.
Because my answer was not what you were searching for at all, you
might want to ask Google Answers to refund the $6 that you paid for
it.
Again, I'm really-really sorry. I never expected this to happen. :-(
Wishing you all the best,
ldcdc-ga

Hi.
I searched for them on ICQ and I found the needed help. I recommend
you to contact them on ICQ too.
Go to http://www.icq.com and download the free software. Install it on
your computer.
The ICQ id number you should look for is 113123031.
It's the best method to contact them and you'll get your answers in
real time.
Also, I asked them about the email support problem. They told me they
changed the email address because of a server issue or something. Try
contacting brian@memenethosted.com instead.
That's "memenethosted", not "memenethosting".
I hope you'll get the help you need by using one of these methods.
If not, that's it. I'm really sorry this simple thing gets so
complicated.
Please tell me how things work out.
If you have difficulties understanding how ICQ works, ask me. I'll do
my best to explain you in a step by step manner what to do.

Regards,
ldcdc-ga

Idcdc:

Thank you so, so much! I will so as you instruct today. To the
letter. You have no idea how much I want this to go through. Then I
can announce my site, and all the google researchers (and the world)
can see my site and how all their help was used righteously. I am
hopeful and enthused all over again! Thank you all over again!

idcdc,

Hi idcdc. Well, I just finished with memenethosting. I emailed some
fool named Brian Larkin, and pleaded with him to have a tech guy call
me to walk me through their maze of procedures to setup my website.
After 5 weeks of ignoring me, he tells me that they won't make an
exception in my case. They do not provide phone support. Only email
support, which is totally insuffient in my case. I did try to do it
unassisted and found their support hopeless. So again, the search
goes on for a web-hosting service. They would not refund my $5.00.,
although I never got online!!

Hi bluestreak.

Thank you for the rating. I don't deserve it at all. I did't really
help you with your search. Despite that, you were very kind and I want
you to know that I appreciate it. Thank you!

Although I didn't get anything from that company, I will give you
credit for trying. It wasn't your fault that the company you
recommended refused to give any effort whatsoever, depending on their
confusing software instructions with no human contact. bluestreak
