Hi George5621 ~

I note that your domain has only recently been registered (June 19,
2003), so I would imagine you haven't yet submitted your site to
Google's search engine.

Submitting your site is a fairly easy and relatively painless process.
You just need to fill out Google's Add URL tool which can be found
here:
   - ://www.google.com/addurl.html

Google also recommends that you submit your site to Yahoo! and the
Open Directory, DMOZ. "... you may want to consider submitting your
site to either or both of these directories. You can submit to Yahoo!
by visiting
http://docs.yahoo.com/info/suggest/. You can submit your site to
Netscape's Open Directory Project (DMOZ) by visiting www.dmoz.org.
Once your site is included in either of these directories, Google will
often index your site within six to eight weeks." (See: Google's "What
else can I do to get listed in Google?")

Before You Submit Your Site
===========================

I would direct your attention to Google's Information for Webmasters.
   - ://www.google.com/webmasters/guidelines.html

Google's Design and Content Guidelines:

   "* Create a useful, information-rich site and write pages that
clearly and accurately describe your content.
    * Think about the words users would type to find your pages, and
make sure that your site actually includes those words within it.
    * Try to use text instead of images to display important names,
content, or links. The Google crawler doesn't recognize text contained
in images.
    * Make sure that your TITLE and ALT tags are descriptive and
accurate."

ALT Tags
========

A check of your source code reveals you do not use ALT attributes in
your image tags. For instance one of your tags is:

  <img border="0" src="_borders/MIcrasterias01.jpg" width="184"
height="150">

You should really add the alt attribute to that image tag so it reads
something like this:

  <img border="0" src="_borders/MIcrasterias01.jpg" alt="description
of graphic" width="184" height="150">

Search engines cannot read graphics, so using the ALT attribute helps
explains what you graphically depict.

DOCTYPE
=======

You should add a DOCTYPE Declaration to your page.

DOCTYPES are essential to the proper rendering and functioning of web
documents in compliant browsers. It is also essential for the search
engines to understand and follow the coding contained on your pages.

DOCTYPE is explained and discussed further in "A List Apart's Article
"Fixing Your Site With the Right Doctype",
  - http://www.alistapart.com/stories/doctype/

and in Web Design Group's article, "Choosing a DOCtype",
  - http://www.htmlhelp.com/tools/validator/doctype.html

Considering that your pages were generated with Microsoft's FrontPage
5, and to ensure your pages appear as nearly as you intend in the
greatest amount of browsers - including deprecating to the quirks of
older browsers in use, I would suggest using:

<!DOCTYPE HTML PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD HTML 4.01 Transitional//EN">

KEYWORDS
========

Although there is no longer the heavy emphasis placed on your keywords
as there once was, some search engines do spider them. Consideration
should be given to make sure the keywords you want to use - that is,
those words you want visitors to find your site, are included within
the content of your site.

I notice you have TWO keywords metatags, you may wish to delete one
set, so no one will suggest you may be "spamming" keywords.

Links to and from your site
===========================

In its guidelines for submitting your site, Google explains, "The best
way to ensure Google finds your site is for your page to be linked
from lots of pages on other sites. Google's robots jump from page to
page on the Web via hyperlinks, so the more sites that link to you,
the more likely it is that we'll find you quickly."

You have some excellent links to other sites on your page (Optics
Society of America, Royal Photographic Society), but you also need
relevant pages linking TO your site.

This will help Google's search engine find your site and will help
with your own page rank. Google's PageRank technology is explained
here:
  - ://www.google.com/technology/index.html

A word of caution: Don't resort to linking schemes or link farms, but
instead to relevant sites which will be happy to link to your own.
Google admonishes, "Don't participate in link schemes designed to
increase your site's ranking or PageRank. In particular, avoid links
to web spammers or "bad neighborhoods" on the web as your own ranking
may be affected adversely by those links." (See: Google's Quality
Guidelines - Basic Principles)
  - ://www.google.com/webmasters/guidelines.html

Submitting Your Site to Search Engines
======================================

After you are satisfied that the site is to your liking, you can
submit it to Google, Yahoo! and DMOZ.

Make sure you pay special attention to Google's adminitions under
Quality Guidelines - Basic principles about using unauthorized
computer programs to submit pages:

    "* Don't use unauthorized computer programs to submit pages, check
rankings, etc. Such programs consume computing resources and violate
our terms of service. Google does not recommend the use of products
such as WebPosition Gold™ that send automatic or programmatic queries
to Google."

Here are some of the search engine sites to which you may want to
submit your site:

* DMOZ -
  - http://www.dmoz.com/

* All The Web -
  - http://www.alltheweb.com/help/webmaster/submit_site.html

* Hotbot & Lycos InSite (requires registration)
  - http://insite.lycos.com/searchservices/

* Yahoo! -
  - http://docs.yahoo.com/info/suggest/

* Zeal -
  - http://zeal.com/

I realize this is more information than you required. However, it is
easier to ensure everything is in top order prior to submitting your
site than to try to change things after you have done so.

Best wishes for successful search engine listings,
