The first Black man to visit Britain must certainly have arrived in Antiquity, at least during the later Roman Empire. Mckenzie Heritage: Before the Black Victorians http://www.mckenziehpa.com/bv/before.html "The first mention of a Black African in the historical record is at a Roman military settlement at Carlisle, in ca. 210 AD. Shortly after, in the years 253-258 AD, Hadrian's Wall on the Empire's northern frontier was guarded by a division raised in North Africa." [...] "The first authenticated African skeleton in the British archaeological record is that of a young girl buried at North Elmham in Norfolk, in ca. 1000 AD." The Roman Emperor Septimus Severus was born in North Africa (modern Libya) and went to Britain toward the end of his reign, invading Scotland. The date mentioned above (AD 210) falls within his lifetime. SEARCH TERMS ://www.google.com/search?q=Black+African+Roman+Britain&hl=en&lr=&ie=ISO-8859-1 hlabadie-ga |

Unfortunately, ca. (circa, Latin for "around") is used for the very reason that the dates are uncertain and can only be tentatively set around AD 210. Septimus Severus arrived in Britian during the winter of 208/209, and died in York in February 211. Septimus Severus: The Caledonian Campaign - Caracalla http://www.stephen.j.murray.btinternet.co.uk/division.htm If one were open to speculation, one could make a case that Black Africans probably arrived in Britain much earlier, during the Cornish tin trade with the Carthaginian colonies in Iberia (Spain). Indigenous Africans must have formed some part of the crews of those ships, Carthage being in North Africa. But the earliest attested arrivals are during the Roman occupation.
