Dear Pedro,
After several days of researching on your subject, it seems to me that
this is the kind of information that the industry players dont want
to leave uncovered. However, its still quite likely that you get, if
not all, at least part of it, following the leads Ive compiled and
organized for you. Let me put it this way: the data you want seems to
be in a locked box in the middle of a labyrinth. Ill give you several
paths to get to the box, but once there, only you can go for the key,
because its either fee based information, or a membership is
required, or else it takes a persistent effort of further inquiry
beyond our scope. I cant offer you a better deal, but I do believe
this might prove to be good enough.
Let me show you the paths to the box.
My first try was searching in government agencies statistics
websites. So I went to Manufacturing, Mining, and Construction
Statistics sector of the U.S. Census Bureau (
http://www.census.gov/mcd/index.html ).
Here, under the title Manufacturing and Mining you have three links
that may be of your interest: Manufacturers Shipments, Inventories
and Orders( http://www.census.gov/indicator/www/m3/index.html ),
Annual Survey of Manufacturers (
http://www.census.gov/mcd/asmhome.html ), and Current Industrial
Reports( http://www.census.gov/cir/www/index.html ). There you can
find several tables on PDF or Excel formats, covering part of the
information you are after. But in the first two cases it is compiled
by industries, so youll get only totals for the category
Ventilation, heating, air conditioning, & commercial refrigeration
equipment manufacturing (identified by NAICS code 33341 --North
American Industry Classification System, very important to know this
for searches -- for a complete classification see the NAICS page
index ( http://www.census.gov/epcd/naics/framesrc.htm )).
In the third case, Current Industrial Reports(
http://www.census.gov/cir/www/index.html ), if you chose CIRs by
subsector ( http://www.census.gov/cir/www/ind_num.html ), then MA333M
( http://www.census.gov/cir/www/333/ma333m.html ), and finally, for
instance, year 2000 (
http://www.census.gov/ftp/pub/industry/1/ma35m00.pdf ), youll get a
PDF file report named Refrigeration, Air Conditioning,
and Warm Air Heating Equipment that is the closest I found to the
information you want, because it is detailed by product, but not the
item you asked for, at least not with the same name.
(As a complementary information, here you are the complete NAICS
codification for this category:
NAICS 3334 Ventilation, Heating, Air-Conditioning, and Commercial
Refrigeration Equipment Manufacturing
NAICS 33341 Ventilation, Heating, Air-Conditioning, and Commercial
Refrigeration Equipment Manufacturing
NAICS 333411 Air Purification Equipment Manufacturing
NAICS 333412 Industrial and Commercial Fan and Blower Manufacturing
NAICS 333414 Heating Equipment (except Warm Air Furnaces)
Manufacturing
NAICS 333415 Air-Conditioning and Warm Air Heating Equipment and
Commercial and Industrial Refrigeration Equipment Manufacturing.
The items of your interest seem to be included in either one of these
subcategories:
NAICS 333411: Air Purification Equipment Manufacturing, which
comprises:
-Air purification equipment, stationary, manufacturing
-Air scrubbing systems manufacturing
-Air washers (i.e., air scrubbers) manufacturing
-Dust and fume collecting equipment manufacturing
-Electrostatic precipitation equipment manufacturing
-Filters, air-conditioner, manufacturing
-Filters, furnace, manufacturing
-Furnace filters manufacturing
NAICS 333412: Industrial and Commercial Fan and Blower Manufacturing:
-Aircurtains manufacturing
-Attic fans manufacturing
-Blower filter units manufacturing
-Exhaust fans, industrial and commercial-type, manufacturing
-Fans, industrial and commercial-type, manufacturing
-Ventilating fans, industrial and commercial-type, manufacturing. )
From Manufacturers Shipments, Inventories and Orders(
http://www.census.gov/indicator/www/m3/index.html ), you can get
linked to (
http://www.census.gov/indicator/www/m3/prel/priorrel.htm ), where
youll find a monthly report on manufacturers shipments, inventories
and orders. I suggest you search the PDF most recent tables, either by
ventilation or NAICS code 33341. As I told you above, the
information here is quite general, referring to the industry as a
whole. A possibility you can try is calling the telephone numbers
below --corresponding to the agency that produce these tables-- and
ask if they could give you orientation for more detailed information.
I called myself but I got no response --I probably missed the working
time. They might lead you to the sources of information provided by
the industry.

Another very profuse government website is Stat-USA, (
http://www.stat-usa.gov/ ). I suggest you try, at State of the Nation
page ( http://www.stat-usa.gov/econtest.nsf ), under the title
Manufacturing and Industry, any of the links you consider related to
your subject, like Manufacturing and Trade, Inventories and Sales (
http://www.stat-usa.gov/stemplate.nsf/validate?OpenAgent&dbID=online.nsf&filekey=mtis.cen
); or Shipments, Inventories and Orders (
http://www.stat-usa.gov/stemplate.nsf/validate?OpenAgent&dbID=online.nsf&filekey=S-I-O.pdf
); or else Wholesale Trade Sales and Inventories (
http://www.stat-usa.gov/stemplate.nsf/validate?OpenAgent&dbID=online.nsf&filekey=whsale.cen
). They will all lead you to a log in page, where password is
required, and theyll invite you to subscribe for $175 a year or $75
quarterly. Im still curious about the information they can provide.
I sent them an email to statmail@mail.doc.gov --that they havent
answered yet, to make sure the information they provide includes the
one youre looking for, in case you consider the possibility of
subscribing their service. If they ever send me an answer, Ill post
it here as a clarification.
Looking for another entrance to the labyrinth, I searched for
industry associations. So, I found this very comprehensive list from
Ferris State University Library, called General & Subject Reference:
HVACR Associations (Heating, Ventilating, Air Conditioning and
Refrigeration) ( http://www.ferris.edu/library/Subject/Technology/HVACR/hvac_Assoc.html
).
The list links to the Associations websites. You can visit them all,
but two of them called my attention:
1) Air Conditioning and Refrigeration Institute (ARI) (
http://www.ari.org/ )
1501 Wilson Blvd, 6th floor
Arlington, VA, 22209,
Phone: (703) 524-8800
Fax: (703) 528-3816
The ARI is the national trade association representing manufacturers
of more than 90 percent of U.S. produced central air-conditioning and
commercial refrigeration equipment. ARI's national headquarters is
located in Arlington, Virginia, across the Potomac River from
Washington, DC. (Text extracted from the site of Ferris State
University).
At the ARIs site, you can expand the menu option Publications, and
then youll see the entry Statistical Profile. Unfortunately, its
members only information. Still, you can get some up to date
information from PDF format ARIs monthly newsletter Koldfax, where,
for instance, unitary shipments information can be achieved.
2) North American Heating, Refrigeration & Air Conditioning
Wholesalers ( http://www.nhraw.org/ )
1389 Dublin Road, PO Box 16790
Columbus, Ohio 43216 - 6790
Email: nhrawmail@nhraw.org
NHRAW was founded in 1947 by a group of wholesalers who recognized
the need to provide, through collective action, for future improvement
in the wholesaling business itself, and for an on-going service
function that would assist both dealer-customers and
manufacturer-suppliers. Today, NHRAW represents nearly 350 wholesaling
headquarters - with more than 2,400 locations and 30,000 employees -
throughout the United States and Canada. The business of our Members
is the wholesale distribution of heating, air-conditioning,
refrigeration, sheet metal, controls and related items. The collective
annual volume of NHRAW members was $13 billion in 1998. (Text
extracted from the site of Ferris State University).
What interested me the most from this site, was the menu option
Resource Links. It leads you to a generous list that includes a
Federal Government category of sites, from which I tried the one
corresponding to the US Department of Commerce ( http://www.doc.gov/
). Once there, I clicked Industries and Sectors Information (
http://www.doc.gov/Industries/Industries_and_Sectors_Information/ ) in
the Industries category. Then Statistics and Market Research (
http://www.doc.gov/Industries/Industries_and_Sectors_Information/Statistics_and_Market_Research/
) and finally U.S. Industry & Trade Outlook (
http://www.doc.gov/Industries/Industries_and_Sectors_Information/Statistics_and_Market_Research/U.S._Industry_and_Trade_Outlook_-_NTIS/
). This Outlook is a for sale publication that, according to the
information copied from the website, contains:
Analyses of the major U.S. industries and sectors in 54 chapters
Industry-specific outlooks for international trade
Discussions of domestic and global economic actions
650 easy-to-read tables and charts
100s of industry reviews, analyses, and forecasts
Geographical snapshots of industry and trade trends
Theres an option to Purchase and Download Individual Chapters (
http://www.ntis.gov/products/bestsellers/industry-trade-chapters.asp?loc=4-2-0
). The Chapter 18 -- Production Machinery (27 pages), includes, among
nine production machinery industries, the air conditioning,
refrigeration, and heating equipment (SIC 3585), mentioned as the
largest subsector, followed by construction machinery, then
agricultural and farm machinery. These three subsectors account for
more than 76 percent of 1996 product shipments of the production
machinery discussed in this chapter.
(NOTE: SIC = Standard Industrial Classification, system established in
1987, replaced by NAICS in 1997, but still in use by some agencies and
publications. Correspondences between both systems can be searched at
1997 NAICS Index ( http://www.census.gov/epcd/naics/framesrc.htm )
Well, as youve seen, the particular product of your interest seems to
be quite elusive to statistic information. Anyway, in order to know
where you can find market information about it, I believe that if
theres any possibility other than tracking it from each manufacturer,
it is by following the leads I gave you.
Tanks for your interesting question and, best luck!!
