My mother wants to maintain as much of an independent lifestyle in her
own home. She can no longer drive and I want to find a reliable
part-time driver who will agree to provide up to 15 hours per week
driving my 90 year old mother to do her errands, help her shop, take
her to her French and Italian classes, the local library, bank, etc.
all within a 15 mile radius of her home in Hollywood Riviera
neighborhood in Redondo Beach/Torrance. My mother is not low-income
and is willing to pay well-above minimum wage plus mileage to find the
right person. Ideal candidate attrtibutes are: female between 45 and
60, has own reliable, well-maintained car, is looking for part-time
work to supplement her existing income (from Social Security, widow
provisions, inheritance, etc.),is flexible, experienced in dealing
with elderly people and can supply references. I am not willing to
advertise in local newspapers, i.e., the Daily Breeze or L.A. Times.
Am seeking your help in (1) identifying appropriate advertising
venues, i.e., local church newsletters, local AARP,
local social service agencies experienced in helping senior citizens
maintain independent lifestyle in own home; determining appropriate
hourly wage and mileage reimbursement in order to attract
well-mannered, outgoing female looking for part time work. My mother
has all her marbles and then some, leading an active life taking
French, Italian and philosophy classes, attending lectures and
foreign films, occasionally swimming at the local YMCA, and going
faithfully to the Unitarian Church in Rancho Palos Verdes. She is as
interested in discussing Montaigne as she is in talking about her 17
month old great grandson. She is a former elementary school teacher.
Her main physical limitation is chronic severe rheumatoid arthritis.
She has the mind, keen intelligence, and sense of humor of a woman in
her sixties but in a 90 year old body. She rarely ventures out in
the evening so the driving duties would take place in the mid-morning
to late afternoons Monday through Friday.
