Hello,

Unfortunately this data is no longer available for public use. Also,
unfortunately it will probably also not be available for research or
educational use either. Currently it's intended for "technical" use
only.

Back in the days of yore, Internic (the one and only registrar at the
time) had a big problem of providing the entire domain name database
on their ftp://rs.internic.net/domain/ ftp. Hackers would pull
hundreds or thousand of random IPs from the master DNS table and then
proceed to wardial (randomly choose and attack until one is
compromised) indiscriminately. Also, with the explosion of the
internet, what was once a 14MB text file gzipped has swollen to well
over a couple hundred megs COMPRESSED.

You can still download the .gov and .edu branches of the TLDs there
(links below -- WARNING HUGE TEXT FILES), but no longer are you
allowed to touch the .com branch. Discussion about the new policy
adopted sometime in 2000 appears below and is linked below as well:

Newsgroup discussion in comp.protocols.dns.bind about the Registry
Database:
"Effective immediately, Network Solutions will no longer make the
.COM, .NET and .ORG zone files anonymously available via our ftp site
at rs.internic.net. It has become apparent that these files are being
used by spammers and domain speculators for purposes other than that
for which they were intended. Network Solutions will make the files
available to any organization that can demonstrate a technical need
for the information.

If you feel that you need this information you may apply for access by
sending email to hostmaster@internic.net. The email message should
contain the following information :

- A subject line stating "Zone file access"

- A statement indicating they would like to have access to copies of
the root zone files. This statement should indicate why they need the
data

- Their contact information (NIC handle, name, postal address, phone #
and email address)

- They should also state any organizations that they are affiliated
with so that we can avoid assigning multiple accounts to one entity

Best Regards,
Network Solutions, Inc."

But perhaps if you wrote a detailed enough proposal, or had a
genuinely legitimate reason for this information they would be willing
to share it with you. It can't hurt to try. Sorry this isn't the
answer you had in mind, but unfortunately since they are they
gatekeepers, there is no way around this. You can get bits and pieces
of .com listings from bulk advertising agencies by buying bulk e-mail
lists, and datamining it from those lists, but it will not be
complete.

I want information that fits the criteria I asked for. If your answer
is negative or to say that it does not exist, then please don't waste
my question because you can't find the information or don't believe it
is available.

I'm sorry you're unhappy with the answer sire-ga, but did you read the
answer completely? I gave you the e-mail address of the people who can
deliver the data to you, but you will have to have a reason other than
business related in order to secure it. Also, two other researchers
have backed me up on my answer (see below) attesting to its validity
and completeness. Please read the answer again, maybe there's
something that you missed.

The zonefile does not contain expiration dates, nor registrars. You
are giving me information that does not fit the criteria I gave you
originally. You assume I am looking for a zonefile. The other
comments that back your answer up, are related to your answer but not
my question.

Clarification of Answer by skermit-ga on 06 Jun 2002 11:44 PDT
Okay, granted, then let me restate my answer to answer your question.
Nobody has access to the data which you are asking for except for
Internic themselves. Internic may grant you access to at least the
IP-->domain name zone files, but ONLY for technical reasons. Other
than that, there ARE NO resources which publish this information.
Sorry.

I'm sorry you're unhappy with my answer, even though I put a lot of
effort into researching it for you. You can always rate my answer for
the work I have completed and then apply for a refund of the question
and then repost it again. Google Answers has a refund page here:

Sorry you don't see me eye-to-eye on this answer although it's been
researched heavily by myself and at least two other researchers.

I'm sorry the answer I was looking for wasn't provided. I am rating
this only 2 stars for that reason, and for the reason that the
answerer is too confident that something does not exist for the mere
fact that he isn't aware of it. In fact, it does exist and has been
sold by various sources. Usually in the form of marketing database
for spammers.

Just to back skermit up, he is correct. I can tell you for a fact
that that information is not available. There are some individuals
who have old "zone files", I know that, but I also know that they
won't sell them or give them to you. That information is just not
available (I tried to get it a while back too).

I'm not a 100% positive on this, but I believe the zone file did
contain expiration dates. If you're not interested in a zone file, I
can absolutely assure that that information is not available.

Now, of course, it is still very possible to obtain the expiration
information for known domain names if you go to the registrar
directly.

For example, by doing a whois search at www.networksolutions.com, I
find that microsoft.com expires in May of 2012.

I know that even after I've changed registrars for my domain names,
old registrars still send me snail mail saying my domain name is about
to expire and I need to "renew" with them. It wouldn't surprise me if
they accumulate a list of names of old clients and occassionally ping
their new respective reigistrars for expiration dates. You can find
the registrar you need with a whois search at internic.net.

Once you have a zone file for .com, it's trivial to write a program to
look up each in whois to find the registrar and expiration dates.
Getting access to the .com zonefile is the hardest part of your
problem.

The information you want is not publically available, and in fact, no
one organization has all of the data. Each ICANN-accredited registrar
controls their own portion of the database, so you would have to get
data (for expiration dates) from each of them.

The only way to acquire the information you want without going through
ICANN would be to brute-force whois lookup every possible .com domain
name [up to 67 chars; alphanumerics and dashes].

Dude,
First if I could get my hands on that kinda of info I would be willing
to pay a hell of a lot more that $10.

Second, This dude is telling you that its not avaliable so stop being
such an ass and except that. No one is going to write a term paper
begging these people for such infomation for a shitty $10.

A term paper wasn't necessary, Resquad. Just an address or a lead.
Something like:

Internich, a company based in Catanzaro, Italy
sells the whois database for .com, .net, .org, and .edu on CD-ROM. The
company promises that each record includes: "Domain Name, Registrant,
Reg Code, Reg Address, Reg City, Admin Contact, Admin Code, Admin
email, Admin Company, Admin Address, Admin City, Admin Tel, Admin Fax,
Tech Contact, Tech Code, Tech Email, Tech Company, Tech Address, Tech
City, Tech Tel, Tech Fax, Bill Contact, Bill Code, Bill Email, Bill
Company, Bill Address, Bill City, Bill Tel, Bill Fax.

As a bonus, just so you'll know what to do with all that information
when you get it, the CDs also come with the e-mail addresses compiled
into a separate database and mass e- mailing software so you can reach
them all at the touch of a button.

The information would be worth more than $10, but not if you get
answers like "it doesn't exist" or "you can't get it." Obviously, its
available and it does exist. The answers just aren't aware of it.

This guy either:
1. Is trying to plug some scam company from friggin' Italy selling
cd-roms with old crap on them (btw one cd-rom=7oo meg(ish) and how
many CD's does Interditch give ya?)

2. Doesn't understand that there are, believe it or not, companies
overseas that can SAY they're selling you something that doesn't
really exist. I just started a company in Haiti that will sell you a
pen that can clone you by replicating your DNA...let me know if you're
interested in that.

my guess is that he's trying to sell something and sees this as a
clever way to plug his scam product. just my 2 cents....

barryfreed-ga,
I don't appreciate the inferences and accusations you've made. I was
looking for information or leads. I found Internich in a google
search. I was unable to find a website or any other way to contact
them. Maybe they don't exist anymore, but regardless of that my point
was the information existed.
