CSHL --

Though it's not a market segment with which I'm familiar, my
professional background is in software marketing. It would be
surprising if there were more than 5 vendors in this area; the top 3
will really be the dominant forces.

Best regards,

Omnivorous-GA

I agree, I was hoping for as complete a list as possible. Perhaps top
10 -- I realize it may trail off viciously after the first 3 to 5 but
the tail-ends of the marketplace are informative as well.

Yes, that would appear to be one! Another one would e-trials. Having
investigated this some since I provided my last response (above) I
think there are easily 20 vendors in the billion dollar marketplace.

Cshl-ga,

I have found a document that discusses in detail the development of
the clinical trials software market, along with other aspects of CRO
operations as they pertain to clinical trials. It describes the
business approaches of all the major clinical trial software
companies, as far as I can tell. However it does NOT rank the
companies, nor does it include revenue information.

Would this be of interest to you as an answer to your question?

Clarification of Question by cshl-ga on 26 Jul 2003 19:21 PDT
no, the CRO market is not of interest -- the Quintiles realm of things
is not what I'm looking for, thanks.

<Clinical Trials Software vendors – top 10 by revenue.

Limitations of the list.
From the information that is published about company revenues I have
been able to compile a list of the top 10 vendors by revenue. However
some companies are active in several industry areas with many products
whilst others specialise only in clinical trials software. Since many
of the smaller companies are privately held, details of revenue are
not published. PHT Corporation is a company that would likely feature
high up on the list although details of its revenue are not readily
available.

There has recently been some consolidation in the industry with a
number of take-overs and mergers, details of which are given below.

1. Oracle Corp

Revenue for year ended 31 May 2003 was $4,844 million.

2. SAS Inc.
http://www.sas.com/
Revenue in 2002 was $1.18 billion.
It is difficult to calculate how much revenue is from its clinical
trials products as the company is active in 11 different industry
sectors.

Other vendors.

PHT Corporation – this company would probably come fairly high up in
the top ten but since it is privately held there are no details of
revenue published. It was founded in 1994 and has received $41 million
in venture capital financing.
