Question ID: 232260
Does anyone know where I can find a cheap Java IDE. By cheap I mean
at most around $300 preferably free. One that has features like
Visual Studio.Net but using Java and cross platform. Most importantly
I would like a development environment that supports Serverlets, EJB,
and J2EE. I would like to be able to develop a web form like you do
in Visual Studio's ASP.Net environment and be able to use Java and
have it cross platform able to run on Linux. Also if it had the
capabilities of an ASP.Net datagrid in its class libraries that would
be great but not necessary. Any help in answering this question would
be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Hi gregoryew,
Try netbeans (http://www.netbeans.org), an open-source pure Java IDE.
It works on all environments, but I'm not sure whether it supports
Servelets, EJB, and J2EE. You can visit its website and see what
features it offers.

Good luck,

I prefer Eclipse (http://www.eclipse.org/) to NetBeans, as free Java
IDEs go - in particular I use it at work.

JBuilder (http://www.borland.com/jbuilder/) is very good, especially
for developing Java GUIs I believe. However, it's not free, far from
it. It's quite cheap for personal use, but if you want to use it
commercially it'll cost you an arm and a leg.

Apart from a few features which JBuilder has that Eclipse doesn't I'd
say Eclipse might even be better anyway - certainly comparable.

Hmph, and why can't I get paid for answering things. ;)
